I have smoked lens LED tails on my car. Just not those exact ones, the other style. And not the third brake light.

TruGreenGAGT 12-05-2010 10:26 AM

just to let ya know.
i dont have that style but i used to have the red 3rd brake light.
it will have a dim glow to it when the car is running an also at night when the lights are on.
which will also in most cases cause you to loose your CC. adding a few resistors will greatly help, or doing the Impala 3rd light mod

I have those or very close to the same ones, including the smoked 3rd brake read this thread I had trouble with the Cruise control though never with the lights staying on ever. I fixed the cruise problem its all in this thread

Actually this one has the Cruise control the last did not

I actually just did the Impala LED 3rd light mod an my CC now works...never had any kind of idiot lights on the dash but CC never worked once i installed Ebay LED 3rd

bricooper78 12-05-2010 07:36 PM

so a 2.2k resistor on the 3rd brake light restores cruise? that's it?? i was going to use the load resistors that were going to be for my turn signals..

you da man!

this just needs added to the positive side wire or jumped across them both (pos and neg)?

I had the abs light come on because I used too much resistance my first resistor was 3.9k that must have tripped the brake switch in the abs computer.

bricooper78 12-05-2010 08:54 PM

you da man!

send out the lifeboats, you da man OVERBOARD!!! wooot wooot

thanks for all help

I unplugged the clip, fed the leads down into the female ends of the clip, left enough lead for it to lay up top like this, and clipped the plug back together. fwiw i used a 1/2w 2.2k resistor- 99cents for a pack of 5 @ radioshack.

I realized it may get warm, so I'll keep an eye on it, I don't see it melting the plastic covering, but if it does, oh well I'll move it :D

Pretty cool lights if smoked.

Seems a bit ridiculous that it would mess with your cruise control though.

Stupid GM.

That is the way I did mine at first, testing purposes, then I soldered it, to make sure it would not come loose from vibrations.

It's not stupid GM it's stupid aftermarket companies. They are putting in a type of light that wasn't designed to be there from the factory, and if you need to add a resistor for it to work properly with the brake light circuit, then they obviously didn't do their job right.

GM designed the automatic shut off for the cruise control to work when the brake lights come on so it would shut off when you apply the brakes. It works fine in stock form. It's not GM's fault if you modify your car and things no longer work as intended. :amraam:

Sorry I would still fault both. CC should turn off when pressure is applied to the brakes independent of the electronics having to do with the actual bulbs and electronics in the tail. It'd be like limiting your speed to 70 when your headlights are on because you shouldn't be driving as fast at night.

They're 2 completely different systems in my mind.

I agree they should have used the cc cutoff on the pedal switch.

bricooper78 12-09-2010 06:43 PM

yup i think it's a very shoddy system, using the brake lights to kill cruise.. lame. but it's simply a 20 cent fix, so i guess it could be much worse.

AaronGTR 12-09-2010 09:47 PM

What do you think turns on the brake lights?

A switch on the pedal, duh. Why place extra switches when you can have one do both? Simplicity of design and cost savings wins out over any retarded ideas you guys have about proper system operation. Leave the engineering to the engineers.

this is exactly my point the switch on the pedal could easily do both, why the extra of having it measure the lack of resistance at the tail lights;crap
