3500 swap worth it?

So I planned on putting a MMS stage 2 kit and a 3500 swap. But after thinking about how much money that would be, I wondered if the swap would even be worth the gains if I'm already putting the stage 2 kit? Let me know your thoughts.

The performance package is geared towards the 3400 so I'm not sure of the gains.

I would start with just a LX9 and go from there.

Anybody think a turbo or supercharged 3400 may be a better idea. MMS told me like $4800 for a swapped 6MT and an additional $2500 for a 3500 motor, or if you can do it yourself you'll save a lot of money.

^For that kind of money I'd buy a better car. Not worth putting that kind of cash into a manual swap and swapping in a stock engine... even if you could do it yourself. You'll be disappointed with the results.

I know what your saying aaron...but I have to disagree. "disappointment" is directly related to "expectations" I know 5 large is a lot of green to drop under the hood of a grand am. It is no secret that the same stack of cash would put some other cars well into the 11s or maybe better. That is not the point. There is something to be said about having to work within the constrants of a given platform. I dont want a mustang, fbody, or (insert your r!ce, kraut and/or hip, cool, dope or "better" car here) so why would buying a different car to mod even be an option. I know you have had your car a while and I know you have spent a lot of money and a lot of time on your car. But wasnt that at least part of the reason you did it? Just because its freggin grand am? I know you have caught sh!t got funny looks and possibly made fun of because you choose to mod a grand am, but that is part of the price you pay to be different. I can make a very convincing value argument for choosing to mod a grand am...the platform does have some huge advantages...but that is for another time. So drop that nickle my friend... the 3500 is a great way to go. Spend wisely, do as much work yourself as you can if you cant do it all, take your time and do it right and most important of all....KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOUR RACING BEFORE YOU RACE IT!!! Nothing wrong with choosing your battles.

My thing is I've already dumped alot of cash in this car and it's my baby lol I love it. So I'm goin to be keeping it for a long while and figure I might as well suit it up a lil

Not expecting to ever have the fastest car on the road or anything, just something to enjoy a lil more.

Oh a side question, if I got the 3500, how would I find parts for it? Like if I needed to replace parts on it. Obviously places like autozone don't have a 3500 as an engine option for a grand am. Probably a stupid question I know

chris_gt_74 03-21-2012 02:38 PM

You should just be able to request parts for what ever the donor vehicle was or is. Part wise a 3400 is a 3400 and a 3500 is a 3500 but the year and model of donor will take care of any possible changes throughout the year models that may have taken place.

That's what I was thinking. But I wasnt sure if changing the vehicle it's in would change anything parts wise.

Sure a 3500 swap can be worth it, but what are your overall power goals? IMO regardless of what anyone else says if your looking for power the best bang for your buck is boosting a stock 3400.

It's cheaper than most would think and will easily give you more power than 99% of the people on here. ;)
