Question Inaccurate Fuel Gauge

I have a 99 Grand Am and this is just one of many issues I'm having. The fuel tank gauge can be off by as much as a quarter of tank. It seems to change based on the incline of the vehicle.

I'm guessing (keep in mind that I am no car guy) that its a faulty float in the fuel pump. The meter works mostly, shows when more gas has been put in and when it is getting low but we've run out when it still showed an 8th of a tank.

I'm wondering based on the info I've given is it likely a bad float or something else? And from there how to go about resolving the issue. Again while I'm not a car guy per-say I can follow instructions, schematics and so forth.

Thanks in advance
