The first thing you need to do is find out where the coolant is going.
If you know that you have a problem with the overflow cap, fix that first... but i am betting there is more to it. I would use coolant dye and a black light and see if you find a leak.

Note, you should be using a 50/50 mix of coolant and water. Straight water will cause you to overheat.
