Cadillac has revealed the official power and performance figures for the 2009 CTS-V high-performance sport sedan, which aims to be the fastest in the world when it goes on sale this year.

Having just completed a record lap around Germany's famous 13.9-mile Nürburgring race course, the CTS-V's supercharged V8 is now certified to produce 556 horsepower and 551 pound-feet of torque, Cadillac chief engineer Dave Leone said Monday.

"Our goal was to build the fastest V8 sedan in the world, and we think we've achieved that," Leone said.

Ace GM development driver John Heinricy recently circled the track in 7 minutes and 59 seconds, establishing what General Motors Corp. said it thinks is a record for a production car. A video of the lap is posted at www.gmnext.com.

The famous track runs through hills and forest about 40 miles south of Cologne, near Germany's western border. Constructed in 1927, it was the site of many high-profile races for decades until Formula One racing abandoned it as too long and dangerous.

Anyone can pay a fee to race around the narrow, twisting course today. Porsche and BMW have used it as a benchmark for their highest-performance models for decades. Cadillac began testing there a few years ago when it launched a new family of cars to compete with top European luxury and performance models.

GM now tests regularly at Nürburgring, which provides handling challenges no course on Earth matches.

The 2009 CTS-V features a supercharged 6.2-liter version of GM's small-block V8 engine and six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

GM also developed a new version of its adaptive magnetic ride control suspension to provide the CTS-V with a soft and comfortable ride in day-to-day driving and maximum road-holding when pushed to the limit.

The 2009 CTS-V goes on sale in October. No price has been announced.

It didn't look slow to me, especially for a sedan. Gotta remember that key word "sedan"... not "sports car". Hard to argue with 556hp too.

ever since they introduced the V line at caddy, ive just LOVED every single one. CTS-V is an amazing looking and performing car!...no question

Not a V, but mostly relevant. I'll be interested to see what the wagon looks like.

News of facility closings and truck and SUV production cuts have been very sobering to GM's plant towns and the union workforce. While GM's live press conference was bad news for many, the General's Lansing Grand River plant had plenty of reason to smile. The facility received word that the CTS Coupe and Sport Wagon were green-lighted for production, giving the plant more variations of the strong-selling CTS. The two-door CTS should provide Cadillac a shot in the arm here in the States, but the Sport Wagon could be a wild card. The sporty family hauler will likely sell well in the wagon-loving Euro market, while also giving US buyers a fashionable alternative to the SUV. The CTS will supposedly receive a 2.9L turbo-diesel powerplant, which will give Cadillac a stronger presence overseas, while giving shoppers States an oil-burning alternative.

One potential downer for the plant is that the SRX will be moving to a front drive platform, meaning that production could potentially move to another plant. The SRX never sold in high volumes and it didn't have a market overseas. The CTS Sport Wagon will arrive in the spring, with the CTS Coupe following during the summer.

GM is not putting anymore Money into the Cobalt. It was 100x better then the POS it replaced. However the Cobalt doesn't compare to what everyone else is doing. The Cobalt will be replaced in 2011. It actually looks like it will keep up with everyone else. We shale see..

I find it funny he said the cobalt exterior looked outdated the day it came out too, because the front actually looks a lot like a scion Tc and young kids are still going bonkers over those.
