Does GM think that no one likes to drive sticks anymore? That's the big issue that I have w/ my GAGT....

automatic trans with manual shift are horrible no matter how you slice it its not the same not even close...GM seriously dropped the ball on this one there was no reason not to include a manual trans the holden commodore along with others was already using it so its not like they had to design a trans from the ground up...GM needs some young blood in there enough with these senior citizens making decisions for the masses

Realistically, the mass majority of people don't like to drive manual transmissioned cars. Your average driver wants an auto, so they can drink their coffee, talk on their cell, or do whatever else with out having to think about changing gears. It's really only people who enjoy driving (read: people on auto forums) who like manuals.
Also, now a days, many 6speed (and even 8speed) transmissions will get better fuel economy than a manual since it is all controlled by computer algorithms for the best shift points.

I'll agree with that most americans are lazy and want auto but if its not costing GM anything to have the manual trans option why not do it? Those that wanted manual are going to be looking elsewhere now not many are going to pony up 35k+ for a GXP just to get manual.

it does cost them money. time and parts to switch over the assembly line for the days they make manual cars. Also, units that sit on lots that people don't want because they are manual instead of auto.

Meh, I guess I don't really see it as a deal breaker- If I was going to buy a sports car, yes I'd get the manual no question... but the G8 isn't a sports car- its a fast 4-door sedan. Same as the SRT versions of the Chrysler product this car will compete against.

Make a limited amount of them then maybe a few thousand of the initial run and thats it.

For now the SRT 300 and Charger are auto only, but now that the Challenger SRT is getting a manual for '09 I would expect the other cars to get the option since they share all their mechanicals.

update:
no exact numbers, but trend is that G8 V8 is selling well. The G9 V6 ..... well, they are basically rotting on lots. Makes sense, MPG difference is basically nil between the two. Thus the V6 is overpriced and makes no sense to buy. Many say it's a bit underpowered for the car too. I'd guess the V6 will be phased out or reduced drastically in manufactured quantity for 2009.

P.S. G6 is still a pile of sales crap (we told them that 4 years ago when they were designing it and posting it here), and I wouldn't be surprised if they start pulling a Kia here soon and offer a free leftover 2008 Grand Prix with the purchase of any new Pontiac

I just read that article recently. I have to say i'm surprised, but don't expect it to continue unless GM is doing some kind of heavy incentive program.

My aunt just did an early lease pull ahead from a Jeep GC Limited, to a fully loaded Jeep Commander. $7000 in bonus cash, plus employee pricing. They're practically giving those things away. I can't say i'm surprised. Chrysler's bleeding a lot in sales right now, but this new tech alliance they just signed with Nissan should change things. GM shoulda done it, but they passed it up.

I want a Pontiac G8 GXP.

Depending on the pricing; & my car insurance rate.

I wouldn't mind driving one, other than the fact I'd never get over the crappy interior. But i'm sure the car has some way of making that irrelevant perhaps.

^That was the article I was referencing to.

On some other positive news, they're saying gas could have peaked. Yesterday, gas was $4.19 for regular. This morning, it was $3.99 at the same gas station. Encouraging, to say the least. But it's almost like they plan it this way so that we're jumping over joy for $3.99 when that's still practically an entire dollar above what it was last year, and still too much to be paying in general. Then again, that's an entirely new subject.
