Don't bitch about regretting buying a Grand Am because its boring.... it is YOUR fault for not buying the right car and not researching enough before you bought the car, not the cars fault. Anyone that goes into modding a GA thinking its going to be even reasonably expensive is completely misinformed.
young and stupid...........my dad told me to keep saving and get something nicer, I didnt want to wait any more. All in all, the ga has done me good thus far. I cant complain.

Just my 0.02 here

13-16k for a 03-04 is way too much

good luck getting a Z into the 12s it won't be cheap they have potential if you have 5k+ to drop into the engine

did you think about insurance? I'm guessing you're 19-21 so your insurance is going to be about as much as a car payment

don't even thinking about driving that in snow

Its not the fact that i can't put this turbo on my car, if I want to I can right now, hell the heads are off, the hardest part of the whole thing would be replacing my head gaskets to withstand psi. big deal, bash me all you want, and my parents are only cosigning, they aren't paying, its my money. I have 8,000 im putting down.

I think folks may have been confused about your source of funding due to the posts you made above. I.e., Selling the wheels to pay the credit card, etc. Then, there was another post you made in another thread:

Best of luck with the new car! I had kinda hoped the turbo would have helped you to see 13's or maybe even 12's.

Not that I think he's making all the best decisions or that I don't agree with some of you, but some of you are also being way too hard on the guy and/or making stupid comments yourself.

don't even thinking about driving that in snow
1) sure, getting a Z into the 12's will cost some money, we all know speed costs money, but it will be cheaper than getting a GA into the 12's. The Z is designed to be a sports car and has more potential.

2) agreed, he better make sure he can afford the insurance payments. Since the car won't be paid for upfront and will have some type of loan or financing he'll have to have full coverage which will be expensive.

3) why can't he drive it in the snow? Have you ever tried it yourself in a new rwd car? With modern traction and stability control and advances in tire design they aren't that bad in the snow, even with all season tires. If he gets a set of winter rims and snow tires he'll have no problem. My dad's '96 vette has snow tires for winter and he passes suv's going up icy hills in Michigan.

You do realize $8K isn't squat for a down payment on a house right? On the other hand if he buys a $14k used car and puts 8 down on it he only has $6K left to pay so his payments will be super low and he'll save a lot in interest too. And he can pay it off in 2-3 years tops. Maybe it's just me but that sounds like a pretty good idea.

Also I'm sure his parents wouldn't be co-signing if they didn't think he could afford the payments or that they could afford to make a payment one month if he didn't have the money. I'm sure he's more responsible than to just not make a payment one month and not tell his parents and screw them over. My parents did that for me when I bought my GA brand new in 2000 and that was with financing for the full $22k price. I could afford the payments and I paid every cent for that car on time every month, and the insurance. They never paid a dime.

And to answer your question, the car will be put in my dads name, so that insurance is lower. he is 56, never had an accident in his life. so our insurance is low. Personally I don't understand why you guys are bashing me. I'd rather have a 350 than my GA

Just do what you want. People will nitpick and find any excuse as to why your plans are not a 'good idea' and this and the other. Fock them. You're the one going to be in a car you enjoy, it's your financial situation, and that's all that matters.
Congrats

8k Down on a House over 30 Yrs is pointless..

Putting the 8k down on the car is smarter.Or put 4k Down on the Car and put the rest in Savings.

How do you figure, Sparky ?

PS: $8K compounded monthly, at an interest (for example) at 4.75% over 30 years = $33,169.43

What i was getting at monthly it makes little sense, When u have to Buy everything for the house. It would make more sense having a smaller or No Car payment or little Credit Card debt.

What I meant by putting 8k on a house was that the money could be used to pay down the loan...

Obviously 8k gets most of you guys nowhere. I searched around for over 6 months and had to put up $15000 on an $80000 mortgage (3 bed 2 bath ~1400 sq ft in Toledo) so I didnt have to pay a rediculous mortgage insurance fee every month. I had all but 5k of the down payment and my parents were nice enough to loan that to me in exchange for letting my little brother room in the house till hes out of college.

So. 8K in your market is not that much but here it is something.

Call me old fashoned (or maybe my parents) but Im glad I never had them pay for anything or sign papers with me. I learned a few lessons about buying things I shouldnt have over the last 5 years but that is neither here nor there. I just think its silly to invest in a depreciating asset unless you plan to keep it till it dies...though kudos for buying it used and not taking the hit on the drive-off-the-lot loss.

Honestly if you want a Nissan, I'd go for an '03 or '04 Sentra. You can get Sentra SER's pretty cheap, and they are bad ass honestly. When we bought the lancer we test drove a 2002 SER, and the thing was freaking quick! I tried to talk her into that car, as it was fully loaded and only like a grand more than the basic Lancer, but she was sold on the space and color of the lancer. Anyway the fuel economy on one is about the same as your GA, insurance will be a lot cheaper, and you could get into one for like 5 grand less than a used Z. And like what RIch said about the snow, the SER is FWD so it will be a LOT better on snow than a Z.

Not knocking you completly though I for one would love to have a 350z. If you think you can handle it and afford it than go for it. I for one however would NEVER have a sports car for my Daily driver. I see nothing wrong with getting rid of your out-dated N-platform car. Mine was a total POS. A Nissan 350z is no doubt a much better car than a Grand Am GT, but the cost of ownership is going to kill you! Not to mention gas prices are at an all time high!
