Is it though? Is burning diesel more efficient than regular gas across the entire spectrum of diesel engines available? I'm not sure so if anyone could chime in it would be helpful.

And to your second statement...BLASPHEMY.

i drive a 4 door 2001 F350 pulling a refrigerated trailer part time for my fathers business and i am generally surprised with the gas mileage out of such a big set-up. without the trailor, the truck has seen 22 mpg on a 50 gallon tank(i think)...between 12-15 with the trailor...

Sounds good to me. If there was more Diesel Power here it would be cheaper at the pump plus better Economy like Europe.

Here in Toronto today the Rack prices by Petro-Canada are (before taxes & retail margins are added in):
87 octane gasoline = $0.681 Cdn/L = $2.21 US per US Gallon
Diesel = $0.774 Cdn/L = $2.51 US per US Gallon

NYMEX wholesale trading currrently:
Gasoline = $1.62 US per US Gallon
Diesel / Home Heating Oil = $2.09 US per US Gallon

So right from the wholesale level there is a spread (between gasoline vs diesel) of:
Petro-Canada Rack Pricing = $0.0933 Cdn/L = $0.30 US per US Gallon
NYMEX wholesale trading = $0.47 US per US Gallon

Gee, after looking at those numbers...
Are we Canadians getting hosed at the wholesale level for gasoline !

Today's Toronto price for gasoline at the pumps is: $1.043 Cdn/L = $3.38 US per US Gallon

Not going to be cheaper at the pump unless they either build new refineries or change they way the current refineries work to output more diesel...which of course would output less gasoline, making it's price go up.

What's messed up is that diesel is much easier to refine as compared to gasoline, but despite that the oil companies still keep the price high, probably to nail the commercial market...

I read an article, I think in C&D a while back about gas vs diesel production. There are basically two ways a refinery can be set up to refine oil into fuel. The way pretty much all refineries in the US are set up, most of the output is gasoline, then a much lower percentage of diesel. In Europe, most of the refineries use the other method, which generates a greater percentage of diesel compared to the US and a comparatively lower percentage of gasoline.

That is why diesel is so popular across the pond. To switch the us refineries to the other method to generate more diesel would not only be a massively expensive undertaking, but it would reduce the amount of gasoline produced at the same time, thus increasing the price at the pump.

It would be awesome to see a diesel CTS.... look at all the performance stuff already available for diesel engines. Plus being able to let the black smoke roll out the exhaust : )
