Back Speakers

2001 Pontiac Grand-Am Gt with Monsoon system all factory. My rear speakers, 6x9's or whatever they are, are blown. If I wanted to replace these with a better after market pair is there a specific wattage of speaker that I should stick to or a certain amount I shouldn't go over?

Its easiest to go with another set of Monsoon rear speakers from a yard or something, or to replace the deck and the speakers

Says something about new/updated cone coating so they don't blow as easy....any truth to this?

they are $34 each there. there shipping can be high though so check that out first before your buy.

I wanted to breathe life back into this because I got on here to ask the exact same questions.

The ones on Ebay say they are improved... the person who started this thread asked if anyone knew if that was true or not but I didn't see an answer to the question. I'd love to know. I'd rather buy replacement Monsoon speakers because I'm not an audiophile; I just want the rattles to go away!!

Question 2: if there really are "improved" speakers that don't blow as easily are the ones being sold by GM Parts Direct THOSE speakers or are they the same ones that are going to blow as soon as I turn the volume up some?

Guess the next time "Skin O My Teeth" by Megadeth comes on XM I don't need to crank it up so high... ... that's when I lost my right rear one... sigh...

I got the ones which are supposedly "improved" and they haven't blown yet. (The ones on Ebay)

Thank you much... I emailed GM Parts Direct and asked if theirs were supposed to be the improved ones or original but probably won't hear back 'til tomorrow or Tuesday.

I might just Ebay them... but saving $40 is nice right now...

I heard back from GMPartsDirect and the said that the number given above, 22698418, is the very latest GM part number. Does anyone know if this is supposed to be a better part than the original? I don't want to save a few bucks only to have it blow like the old ones. I'd rather spend more and go to the hassle of making Kappas work, although I'd RATHER just get original replacements. I know anything can blow, too, I'm not that naive... just looking for any input. The part number on Ebay is the same one as GMPartsDirect, so they are the same speaker; I don't necessarily trust Ebay just because it says they are better though. All other things being equal I'll pay a lot less on PartsDirect.

I guess I've hijacked this thread, but I felt it was better than getting flamed for starting a new one... oh, wait... that's the other big Grand Am forum, isn't it... LOL... thank Goodness for this one anyway.

If everything is the same as the E-Bay and the GmPartsDirect, then go for it.

I have had NO issues w/ the ones I got on E-Bay.

Allrighty... I ordered. Two of them shipped to my door from gmpartsdirect for right at $81 with shipping. I appreciate the vote of confidence on them.

wouldn't an aftermarket pair be better or are the monsoon speakers that good, because i know you can get some better speakers for $81 plus shipping. but i guess i wouldn't know since i ripped my stock ones out the first week i had my car.

How are kappas a hassle? I just got a pair of Hertz that I am putting in today. There are pieces of foam all over my trunk from my surrounds falling apart!!

For me they are a hassle because they are not a DIRECT replacement, as far as I've been able to find out on here... you have to do some kind of mod to them so far as the built-in crossover is concerned unless I'm mistaken. Therefore, to me, they are a hassle. The sound from my stock speakers was fine for me... I'd just rather have something that goes right back in there.

ga2001gt532- For $81 you can get some replacement speakers with dual inputs for the treble and bass?

Really doesn't matter... I'm satisfied. If I was an audiophile wanting to put a grand or more into a system maybe I wouldn't be... those days are behind me.

Thanks for all of the input from all of you... it is most appreciated...

The Kappas are easy to wire in, but the updated Monsoon speakers are good for replacement. The paper cone was replaced with a poly cone (like almost all speakers), so they can withstand the vibrations better, and shouldn't blow as easily. For anybody reading this, you can send me a PM or email for instructions on hooking the Kappas up.

Anyone know where I can still find these for a good price , lowest I have found is $37 each and I hate blowing money on stock. I realize this is an older thread but better to revive an old convo then to rehash it and claim it as new

thanks for using the search button, most of us wish more people would.

as far as stock replacments go i have no idea how cheap you could get them, or where from.

with that being said i wouldnt recomend wasting your money on them. you can get much better speakers, for less money, that will not only last longer, but sound a hell of a lot better as well.

http://www.woofersetc.com/p-9126-se6...-speakers.aspx

http://www.woofersetc.com/p-7547-ts-...-speakers.aspx

if your willing to do the work of replacing them, why not replace them with something better?
