Yup! You know your stuff! It was a band-aid fix that the 3800 powered F-Bodys, Grand Prixs (and turbo Buick Regals) guys used before mail order tunes and HPT got involved. I can admit that it worked far better on my Firebird than it does the Grand Am! I have been trying to lean out the injectors for some time now until I finish the FI kit. I am really going through gas more because the weather is cold.

Ok, I got the intercooler piping worked out well...in fact the car is now breathing through it with no airfilter, HA! It is routed to the passenger side, but I will have to start working on the charge piping from the compressor to the front passenger side. I have not finalized a design yet. As you can tell from the pic, the air temperature sender is mounted across from the BOV...
![]() I did leave out some details. I forgot to mention that you will need to trim some of the plastic from the winshield washer resevoir, and you will also need to cut off the thin metal bracket that holds the bottom part of the air cleaner assembly. This is all depending on how your bends are made. Sorry, but I did not get a pic of that. |

Here is the "meat" of the exhaust piping that I began tonight! It took me almost a whole hour to sand and scrub the rust off this thing so that I could start painting and wrapping it up! I used a can of black VHT, a can of DEI silicone spray, some old exhaust wrap that was leftover from my Firebird project, and stainless locking ties if you can see from the pic. I stuck a heat gun inside the pipe so that it could dry alot faster.
![]() Here is the "finished" product... This is what happens when you run out of exhaust wrap by about a foot. I will finish the bottom part later. ![]() On the car and ready to drive, I have two more small sections of piping to work on which near the CAT and muffler.. ![]() And before anybody starts whining about the silver foil on the pipe, Here is the explanation: This is aluminzed tape that will help keep more of the heat in and moisture out! The principle is no different than you baking a turkey in foil in the oven. Even heating (and more of itI just know that somebody is gonna throw some gas on me, but I brought my flamesuit! |

To make matters worse my father backed his stupid mini van into the driver's door and made a nice sideswipe streak on it! I will have to hurry up and finish it before taking it to the body shop for repairs and paint to the door! I guess that I just can't win. I will be back at the muffler shop early tomorrow to have them help mount the charge piping. |

CHARGE PIPING COMPLETE!!!!
Gentlemen, I would have had this finished today, but the guys at the muffler shop are a bunch of SCRUBS! They worked on everyone elses car and only did half of mine. At least the charge pipes were completed. Here is what they cosist of..Aluminized 2 inch piping, Silicone connectors, flexible exhaust repair pipe (4 feet aroud the wheel well) and 2 inch radiator hoses. I went the cheap route, but I know for a fact that radiator hose (while not reccommended) works really, really good for charge pipe couplers The wanted to go with a silicone piece around the wheel well, but nobody makes one that big. The flex pipe works wonders, and it wont'leak. The splash panels still fit into place with ease. You really can't tell they are there. I will have them painted black like the rest of the car in a little while... Enjoy the pics... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [IMG]http://i368.photobucket.com/albums/oo130/3800SERIESII/1229198824.jpg] ![]() The muffler and turbo will be joined together next weekend. I am going to cut everything off on Friday night and have all the parts ready to be rewelded so that I won't have to waste any more time like today. |

at how completely unnoticeable the kit was. If you look at the last pic you can see that the rubber hose goes over the control arm (or axle I think). We took turns moving the chassis up and down on the lift to make sure that no moving parts would damage the charge piping... |

On this project, I took my time, made many, many calculated measurements, and I have been driving the car consistently to ensure that the hot and cold parts do not interfere with any aspect of daily driving. There are zero leaks so performance should be up to par with a standard STS turbo system that you would shell out $4 grand! Performance wise, I am hoping to get similar numbers and times as this guy here:http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/po...unt-turbo.html As you can tell from his last few posts his system was upgraded with meth and intercooling. After I finish my system I will get to a dyno sometime in January. |

How'd you make sure that the piping wasn't going to show in the wheel well?

tack from the bracket to the metal part of the well. I can now move the pipe into position (if needed) and drive a metal sheet screw into the bracket so that it will hold in place. Right now there is no vibration or contact of the pipe against the well. I will send you a pic of what I am referencing so that you can see it better... |

the project is looking very good. That's the same way I have planeed my rear turbo setup. I just order the mandrel pipes for the charge pipe. At first I was thinking about using the flexible exhaust repair pipe like you did but that will affect the performance of the turbo. I had the aluminum intercooler pipes welded last week (the pictures I post it before) I want to minimise the amount of silicone couplings on the turbo.

Yeah, I am sure that the flexible section was not the best choice, but it will definetly hold bost, and it was a quick decision. Are you going to have one special made or are you going to weld up pieces together? |
