Since you want a truck with good gas mileage, power and AWD, how about this American example...

There's a big difference between 4-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Ask anyone who has ever driven a truck as compared to a Subaru, Audi, or small SUV with AWD. Trucks are great in the snow, but a true AWD vehicle with good tires will beat a 4-wheel drive any day. My best friend has a 2000 S-10 and it breaks down weekly. It gets around 18 mpg on the highway if he's lucky and his old '97 Grand Am 4-banger was faster. A co-worker has a 2002 S-10 he paid over $30,000 for and just paid off a few months ago. It's now worth $6500. My uncle has a Colorado. He hates it because it, too, constantly has problems and is cheaply made. I'm not totally against American vehicles. My fire company just got a 2008 Ford F-450 Super Duty Diesel. It's incredible. Similarly, my company has '08 Chevy Silverados that are also very nice, but the materials used in Toyotas, Hondas, and Nissans are better IMO. Let's face it... in the small pickup market, you simply can't beat a Tacoma, Ridgeline, or even the Frontier. Now, if the Ridgeline just wasn't so funny looking. ![]() I do appreciate brand loyalty and the sense of patriotism by wanting to "buy American," but the best advice I can give is don't be like I used to be and have negative opinions of "foreign" cars just because somebody else said they suck. If you're in the market for a vehicle, do your research, have an open mind, and try out everything (yes, even the Hyundais, Suzukis, and Kias in the world.... for the wife, of course ). It has a lot to do with personal taste, but after driving a Ford, Dodge, Chevy, and Toyota, the Toyota is the best fit for me in the large pickup category. I'm going to start test-driving some sports sedans in a few months to see if those would better suit my needs. You can't rush or unreasonably limit your choices when making such a huge financial decision such as buying a car. You wouldn't pass up a house that perfectly suits you just because it may have been built by master carpenters who where not from the United States, would you?

Not to mention toyota and honda, and possibly others are built by american workers.
oh and a note about the materials in "foreign" cars they do not have so much overhead in production costs compared to gm and ford they can put better options in and still sell it cheaper.

I haven't ruled anything out yet, but I'm strongly leaning to the Toyota or a Subaru. It's all gonna depend on if I can find a good used one at the time I'm purchasing and, of course, on my budget and specific needs.

Speaking of small pickup trucks, has anyone seen the new Suzuki Equator? It looks to be built similarly to the Tacoma, but it's much less expensive. It has the same 4.0 DOHC V6, but has 261 horses and 281 lb-ft. of torque with a 6500 lb. towing capacity. It seems to be a pretty good contender in the market. I just can't believe it came from Suzuki...

Amazing vehicle, but is it fairly easy to find one around where you live? Plus, you're talking about some serious cash. I was looking on autotrader.com at some that were $60k and others that were up around $100k. It looks like even one with under 100,000 miles in good shape will run you $35k at minimum. But who can really put a pricetag on having a Supra????

no they aren't. but i have 2 friends that have them and are in the supra community and i'm on supraforums.com just as much as i am on ga forums. i don't mind driving cross country to pick the best one up. the color i want is VERY rare so i don't think i'll find that one. but when i find one that is right for me i'll drive to NY or cali to go get it.
