Sweet I'm finally making progress!! I used the adapter and plugged my mp3 player in, and with the level turned all the way up on the amp, I heard no noise, regardless of the volume I played it at. So this means it is from the head unit obviously. I'm gonna go try cutting off the heated seat power wire first to see if that does anything, if not, I'll connect the red wire of the head unit to the yellow one?

noise problems...
Good...glad to hear you narrowed the problem down. Try if possible to NOT connect any other type of devices to the same power and ground as the head unit. This way, it eliminates any potential of inducing unwanted noise from devices that may induce noise.
Your almost there, and I bet you can see the light now. Let me know....

Alright, I did what you said. Didn't do anything... First I tapped the red wire into the yellow, that didn't help. Then I cut off all extra wires using the same power or ground as the head unit. Didn't help either. I'm lost; help me oh great one!
Oh and a side note, I've been doing this with my car not running, so I don't think engine noise has anything to do with it, if I'm understanding correctly the definition of engine noise. |

Could I just connect a speaker through the head unit wiring and see if that has noise. Won't that tell me if it's a problem with RCA grounding?

noise problem...
I thought your noise problems were when the engine was running. If you going to check for engine noise, then yes you should have the engine running to see if the problem is solved. If you are getting other noises like hearing the cd load or other mechanical noises while the volume is low, then those noises are related to the cd load mechanism in the head unit.
This sounds more and more like the problem is the head unit. Possibly there may be a ground issue internally in the head unit. It is rare but not impossible. If the head unit has been in other cars, it is possible. I rarely use the same head unit in other cars. I will use amps and some subwoofers from car to car. Mids and tweeters I usually leave in the old car. By the time you get a new car, the head unit is probably obsolete and there are newer and better pieces out there. For most car stereos, head units have the most moving parts that last only so long. Next is mid and high frequency speakers that usually become dried out, exposed to heat or vibration over time which can deteriorate over time. Amps also go through heat and vibration but usually do not so wear as fast. Subwoofers are usually in boxes and in areas where there is no sunlight. They will take the most abuse but they are designed to take it in the long run. Overall, from everything you have mentioned, it sounds more and more like the head unit it the cause of your noise problems. Do the last few tests and see what you find. BTW. connecting your speakers through the head unit power defeats the purpose of having an amp in the system. You will end up underpowering them which can result in blowing your tweeters and mids. If you want to check for rca grounding, get a wire from your ground point and just touch it to the shielded side of the rcas while they are plugged into your head unit. Make sure the engine is running too. No need to do all that connection stuff until you are sure that will solve the problem.

Okay, yea all this happens if my car is on or off it doesn't matter. I can hear the cd loading AND playing from both the head unit AND the speakers. Also like I mentioned I can hear blinkers, wipers, etc. And when I turn my car off I can hear a loud pop. okay, well the last 2 things im going to test is relocating the rcas away from any other wires, and also ill try the grounding thing you just said.

Alright I found the problem. It was your original hunch after all thormxkid -- RCA ground. I stuck a piece of wire on one of the rca shields so it was touching the shield and the metal surrounding the receiver. That completely cut off the noise. Can you let me know how to permanently fix this? Do I have to wrap the wires around the RCA's like thormxkid showed or do I have to physically touch it with a wire or what?

I found a couple links, tell me if this is what i need to do/get.
http://bcae1.com/images/rca/temporar...eldrepair.html http://www.crutchfield.com/p_127SNI1...tab=review#tab And for wrapping the wires around the rca's do I strip the wire first so it's making contact, or does it just make an electrical field? Last edited by aiixon; 04-20-2009 at 02:27 PM. |

WOOOOOOOOT!!!!!! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! I GOT IT!!! rofl...
I just stripped the wire and wrapped it around all the rca plugs and grounded it. IT WORKS SO GOOD! My sound is incredibly clean I'm so glad I invested in nice speakers! I have my level set just past half and I can't crank the volume past 25 (goes to 35) without covering my ears!! I matched my subs volume and bump with the speakers so it flows and god I just want to sit in my car all day long!! Thanks for all the help oldinstaller, and thormxkid, I should have taken your advice at the very start. I just wanted to save that for later because I thought it would be more time consuming than it was (5 mins). During the process this was a huge pain in the ass and I was just dreading all the more time and money I would have to put into my system, but the aftermath just makes me happy. I have learned so much more about car audio and electrical circuits from this process and all the reading I've been doing to fix it. Once again thanks! |

glad you figured it out. but your whole thing about cranking your volume not a good idea. you should only use 3/4 of you deck volume...any higher and you'll be driving your deck into clipping( witch blows speakers) Last edited by thormxkid; 04-20-2009 at 03:21 PM. |
