trunk rattle areas?

Hi Guys,

I have put some foam in various places in the trunk to drop the rattle. It's helped alot but there's room for improvement. Jus curious for those who dynamated thier trunks..what other areas did u put it in. I am not aiming for perfection in this area as its impossible with this car.

I noticed the biggest improvement was wrapping those to bars that intersect...that go from left to right on the underside of the trunk lid.

there's a vent with a flap over it that is the biggest rattle, it's located on your right side (passenger) facing the trunk, under the carpet.

some people have taken off the flap, but if you drive alot of dusty roads you may not want to do that. you can try taping it shut and seeing if that works without overheating your amp.

other than that, no real option on the vent..and it's definitely a problem area for most.

i have to take a look into that. i read a post here mentioning not many people get the dust issue. I also have all the cables and looms and such done as well as 3rd brake lite


edit: i checked and your right ..that is the loudest rattle. i will look into it sometime next week when i am off durring the day. just need to get some more foam.

the gray plastic piece that runs the width of the rear deck, that the rear deck clips into was my last problem. after i put foam tape along the edge of it where it cups under to the inside of the trunk and hits against the metal underside part of the rear deck my rattles reduced to basically zero.

i used foam tape. i think the tape might've been 1/8th inch thick and 1/2 or 3/4 inch wide. just not so thick that it makes bulges. 5 PLACES with this 1. i took out that cardboard rear deck and put tape on the underside along the edge wherever i could see that it touches metal. 2. along the edges of that gray plastic piece i wrote that las post about. 3. a few strips on the back of my license plate. 4. along the headliner, u shouldn't have to pull it down just stick a strip along the edge between the headliner and the metal that the windshield is glued to. 5. those A-Pillar plastic things by the rear seats on each side of the rear window. Next i used some thicker foam tape maybe 1/4 inch thick, to do the perimeter of the trunk lid. all that would take about 2hrs and cost about $15 at walmart.

I had some insulating foam lying around so I decided to give that a shot before I go out and purchase the foam tape.

The hardest part was getting the rear deck off. That was a pain.

I wrapped up all the wires and cables and secured them. THe vent thing in the trunk..i couldn't get it out so I just stuffed it with foam and it's such a huge diff.

In the end I still had one big rattle and it turns out it's coming from the stock 6x9s. The black fabric/cone thing rattles pretty loud...the right speaker more so than the left speaker.

I ended up disconecting the 6x9s and taking them out and wow..such a difference. Almost no rattle from the trunk at all. I am now able to turn up my base even louder than before without having to worry about rattle from the back...but now I hear areas in the front rattling but I will save that for another day.

My question is..how can I stop the cone from rattling like that? Do I just buy the foam spray and spray it inside that area from the back? Or do you guys just leave the 6x9s disconnected and stick with just the sub. I didn't really notice any difference in sound quality when I took them out so I don't know where to go with these. WHen I press my finger down on the cone when music is playing it stops the rattle. They still sound good (when they dont rattle) so I dont want to throw these out If i can minimize the rattle.

Well that is the speaker cone itself. One of 2 scenarios. 1 the speakers are partially blown, or being played too loud and distorting. In that case you should replace them with aftermarkets. 2 the bass frequencies in the trunk are interfering with the speakers. This could be the problem since our speakers aernt boxed. I know some other gm cars (monsoon maybe) have boxes that fit behind the 6x9's. maybe a set of those would fit in and cut the interference?

interesting.. i doubt it's blown..I never have it up that loud. And it was never that way before....not until recently when I was driving and my trunk fle open then slammed shut did I start hearing rattle. And I find at times they rattle..some days they don't at all.

So the foam idea won't work? I need to go to home depot to return some extra gutter gaurd..I figure I will pick up some expanding foam and give it a try. If it doesn't work, then I will just leave them out till I can pick up some aftermarket spearkers..


Now as you said..since it may be bass interfering with the speaker cone..wouldnt it make sense that it will do the same with aftermarket speakers as well since they are exposed the same?

Right, theyre 2 different scenarios. The way to test is to run your system a bit without the sub on. (give it some time, since it may appear more with some frequencies than other). If they sound fine, its probably interference. In that case aftermarket speakers wont help too much (it will help some, since the cones will be stiffer) but youre best bet is moving, removing, or boxing them.

Whatever you do, dont foam the speakers. If the expanding foam doesnt just totally crush the cone when it expands, it will ruin the speaker. The cone vibrates to produce sound. if you put something against it, it will either stop moving, and just hum, or rattle against the foam, and make waaay more noise.

i replaced my stocker with a set of jl vr6x9s and they get muffed from the trumk bass.

I always keep my back of the seat the comes down.. the smaller one down.. so the air from the subs has somewhere to go... and not beating the hell out of my alpine type R 6x9's in the back...

I had to redo my stock speakers as soon as i got my car cause they were insanely blown...

its possible its just the liscense plate thats rattles, i wish these cars had boxes for the 6x9s, the only car that i ever saw that had them was my last car a 1991 bonneville, but having that small seat down does help

My wife's Satty had issues w/ the license plate rattling like hell. I put double sided tape aound the plate, stuck it on and then screwed it down. No more rattling.

nothin to do with the plate i've already fixed that...

it's the bump cover it's self

having the seat down give more bass, but doesn't stop nothing out side the car from rattling

Fill up the bumper w/ expanding foam.

THANKS for the advice - I had a rattle that I could not fix and using a small stip of foam where the trunk lid meets the window - Solved the problem...
