'Over-Sized' Oil Filters

On the 3.4L 3400-series V6 engine:

Stock oil filter = AC Delco PF-47

'Over-Sized' (bigger than stock) oil filter = AC Delco PF-52

Nothing but good. No other way about it. There're some 3400 cars coming into the shop that I wanted to throw a PF 52 on and add an extra .5 quarts of oil.

You pretty much hit all the benefits. A lot of us GP guys use a 4.3L filter for that reason.

just out of curiosity, what is the ac delco pf52 and napa gold 1036 meant for (what engine)

somebody here mentioned "us 4.3L guys use it for that reason" so these filters are standard size for say a GMC Jimmy/Chevy Blazer?

I for one have switched from the $13 K&N to a $7 Napa Gold 1036, which from what I've read is better designed (made by Wix).

For those using mobil one oil filters, the stock size is M1-101 and iirc the slightly longer larger capacity one is M1-201.

I use a M1-102 now myself because I have the oil cooler and filter relocation kit and it uses a different thread size... but I believe the larger one for that would be M1-202?

yeah i used a larger than stock filter too... it was actually cheaper than the normal one for my car, so its a win win form me.

in my mind, having a larger filter means a little more oil and a little more flow so its def a good idea if it fits and if its available.

(I was researching the Wix / NAPA Gold oil filter for my new G8 GT, & was using my Grand AM oil filters for comparison.)

Regarding Wix's oil filters:

Wix 51040 / NAPA Gold 1040 (similar to stock size AC Delco PF-47):
Beta Ratio: 2/20=15/31
Max Flow Rate: 7-9 GPM
Nominal Micron Rating: 19

So that means:
Beta 2 ratio = 50% efficiency at 15 microns
Beta 20 ratio = 95% efficiency at 31 microns
& it flows 7-9 gallons per minute max

Wix 51036 / NAPA 1036 (similar to oversize AC Delco PF-52):
Beta Ratio: 2/20=12/26
Max Flow Rate: 7-9 GPM
Nominal Micron Rating: 19

So that means:
Beta 2 ratio = 50% efficiency at 12 microns
Beta 20 ratio = 95% efficiency at 26 microns
& it flows 7-9 gallons per minute max

PS: & they flow about double what the stock AC Delco oil filters can.

Compared for the oil filter for my G8 GT:

Wix 57060 / NAPA Gold 7060 (similar to stock size AC Delco PF-48):
Beta Ratio: 2/75=8/22
Max Flow Rate: 10-12 GPM
Nominal Micron Rating: 21

So that means:
Beta 2 ratio = 50% efficiency at 8 microns
Beta 20 ratio = 98.6% efficiency at 22 microns
& it flows 10-12 gallons per minute max

So if you use an oversized filter, you use 5 quarts instead of 4.5?

id be interested in this too. the stock filter for the subaru's is so freakin small.

your 05 subaru filter is only 2.5" tall so the one i listed would be a nice step up.
