I used Kendall High Mileage on my last oil change because thats what Firestone uses, no idea about filter, but im going back to Castrol GTX High Mileage been using it since i got the car but was very broke when OC was needed. Also does any1 use the GM Oil Life to change there oil or do 3000 miles between changes

I've used Mobil1 for 30+ years in all kinds of rigs with no complaints. I keep jugs of it around to use on family/friends when I do 'first-aid' for their vehicles and most people seem to think their cars like it better. Maybe not the 'best' but very dependable... and not that expensive really.

Pushing oil to its limits is not a good practice. Oil changes are "preventive maintenance" in my opinion. Preventive meaning "before" the oil craps out and allows damage to occur. The car companies tell me to change every three K, then I change every two. I trust manufactures as far as I could kick 'em. What do they want? They want your car to last for four years and then have the wheels fall off and give you some $hit story as to why you are driving away in a "new" one. I'm putting up the BS flag on car makers.... CROOKS! Every last one of them.....
If you have access to having your used oil tested, I certainly do not, then sure, go ahead and push it as far as you "know" it's good for. For someone like me it is a complete shot in the dark. I will error to the side of caution thank-you very much... ![]() |

Regular oil can last as much as 4-5K, synthetics, usually 6-8K depending on how you drive. Royal Purple, Amsoil, and Castrol Edge can be pushed between 10-12K, but at that point, you really have to use a high quality filter. I'm on my second batch of Edge, I'm gonna push it to 8K, and depending on it's condition, go from there.

On dino oil I would go every 6 months or 5,000 miles if you did not have an oil life monitor (or it wasn't reset). Otherwise I will trust the oil life monitor and change the oil when it gets between 20-30% (or if you don't have the driver's information center, then when the light goes off).

I'd take a sample of the oil and send it here. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ The oil change light just comes on based on the computers calculation of how long and how hard you've driven the car. It can't actually tell anything about the condition of the oil and it usually assumes you are using crappy oil or driving in bad conditions. If you are using a good synthetic you may be able to go almost twice as long as what the oil change light says. IE on my grand prix I'm going 3k miles past when my oil change light comes on, based on my oil test reports.

Aaron, thanks for that link bud. I just ordered the kit myself. Just changed my oil yesterday and at the 3,000 Km's mark Ill take a sample and send it in. Looks like they do deal with "out of country" clients! I never thought for a second that I would have access to this. I am going to pass this on to the Canadian club in case I'm not the only one interested in this.

I use Mobil1 or Elf Evolution in the GA but I have to hand it to Pennzoil and their SUV, Truck and Minivan Synthetic Blend motor oil. I ran less than 1 quart of it in the S10 for lots of hard summer driving 100 degree+ Las Vegas weather, corners/roundabouts, stop and go with points of oil pressure dropping to 0 over a couple of thousand miles. When I found out (long story) my stomach dropped but to this day she is fine. That's protection.
By the way, never let that happen on a car that you care about. CHRIS

Generally Mobil 1 Conv 5W-30.... And I change it every 6k or so.... 160k and counting. Not driving the car at hi revs for long periods. I think just about any oil is fine. (IMHO - unless all out performance driving / beating on the car - the marketing for oils and 'change every 3000 miles! is a just BS).
Plain and simply the average driver doesn't abuse their car enough to require such frequent changes. Cycling - whatever, science - blah (= corporate marketing & profits), real life - my car has been fine abused and not with 6k intervals and using conventional. DON'T RECOMMEND, but interesting -My cousin is not a car guy and had a Ford Taurus with 180k (3.0) that he used to go back and forth to the station, around town, occasional highway. He did not change the oil in the car for 28k miles, nor added.... THAT's NO BS. The motor never died, never felt lamer than usual, and the car ended up blowing out the PS Rack ($1200 repair) so he donated the car. .00015 OUT

Changed mine today...splurged. Went with Castrol Syntec 0w30 European Formula and an over sized K&N filter. Then I washed the car and am now waiting for the K&N cone air filter to dry so I can re oil it.

Anyone how believes the Car Manufactures recommendation, in my opinion, are pretty much resting right below their "teet". Car Man. and Oil companies have a pretty damn strong relationship for one another, because of the supply discounts/marketing and the long guaranteed profit contracts. I go normally around 5K-6K in my oil and once i drop it, you cant really see much of a difference. I went 8k once and the oil just started looking dirty. I know many oils are different but they still have the same basic properties. Don't get me wrong, Im no expert but i believe what i see and not always what im told. |

Could someone elaborate why Mobil 1 isn't good? I've always used either mobil 1 fully synthetic, or Q horsepower fully synthetic. The last time I changed my oil though, I used the advanced fuel economy mobil 1. I use acdelco oil filters.
