Oh woopdeedoo the NA rotary isn't blindingly fast...and an 87 Rx-7? Yea...GREAT comparison there. But yes even the stock Rx-8 for example runs quarter mile times at about what I'm running now. Now put us on a real race track and the 8's gonna be driving circles around me.

Here's the FACTS: The rotary has advantages and disadvantages...now wait for it....SO DOES THE LS LINE! You can argue the finer points all day long but it boils down to ONE simple concept: PREFERENCE.

I hate to break it to ya, but that's the facts of life. You don't like it, go cry to mommy.

^ That's good.

yeah, both engine have their draw backs. The rotary over heats, uses a ton of fuel, makes a ton of emissions, breaks all the time, and isn't really that much lighter than an aluminum block V8. The LSx engines are just too damn reliable and you get bored not having to fix your engine all the time. And then there's all that pesky torque that makes it easier to drive when you have that twin disc clutch for holding 600hp.... what a PITA!

LOL, I never knew people actually endorsed the rotary engines. I thought people bought the cars with intent on the engines blowing so that they could do an ls / 2jz swap.

Massive rotary hate

I don't mind them, but I appreciate a LSX swap as well

haha. The rotary is cool for what it is. They are amazing boosted, but they can never stand up to boost for any extended period of time.

I test drove an rx8, and it has no "pants" horsepower. Feels totally gutless. Handling is awesome tho

I would've expected more common sense out of you...apparently I was wrong. If you want to debate this get your FACTS straight and quit being a fanboi mmkay? But since I'm in a generous mood I will give you just a few simple MEASURABLE facts.

FACT the rotary has greater volumetric efficiency than a piston engine due to not having valves.

FACT the rotary has a greater mechanical efficiency than a piston engine due to fewer moving parts and thus less parasitic loss.

And because I just like rotaries and I'm not a fanboi I'll throw in another tidbit.

FACT the rotary has a slightly less thermal efficiency than a piston engine due to the design of the combustion chamber and thus is why its not a torque monster.

I said it was a matter of preference and if you were smart enough to do your research instead of repeating all the bad stuff you've heard you'd have something more intelligent to say.

Back on topic though, if anyone wants to spend the $$ it takes for an LSx swap and can do it WELL good for them. However, personally speaking when I get my Rx-8 I'd rather spend $8-12k on making the rotary engine in it the best it can be, rather than swapping in an LSx.

Oh and for the record a fully dressed LS1/6 is 190lbs heavier than a fully dressed Renesis (read Rx-8) engine. Its also 130lbs heavier than a fully dressed Rx-7 FD engine. However, when you remove all the plumbing and parts associated with a turbo setup the final weight of the car (if done smartly) can be less than with the rotary engine and turbo setup in the Rx-7.

sheesh, whatever man. I have enough "common sense" to know that rotaries can't make reliable power.

At the end of the day, it's still a rotary.

in the end torque wins.

Again you have displayed your ignorance for hard facts rather than hearsay. A news flash for ya: An idiot can just as easily destroy a piston engine as a rotary.

I'm done explaining myself to anyone who is too ignorant/lazy/stupid/whatever to do some simple research or listen to facts.

This is why I don't like talking rotaries here...its like talking to a Chevy fan about Fords...you get the typical "I'm right no matter what" mentality. Lemme know if you ever want to discuss facts and advantages/disadvantages of both powerplants.

Man, really.... stop being a douche bag and getting your panties twisted over this. You REALLY think I don't know anything about rotary engines? I have subscriptions to like 5 import magazines. I've heard a lot more about them than just "hearsay". I've seen plenty on the internet about them too. I know all about their advantages and disadvantages... less rotating mass and not having to convert linear motion to circular motion=high efficiency and all that crap, blah blah blah...

You can talk about it forever. Bottom line is this. Yes, they are an interesting engine design and have some unique engineering concepts. That doesn't mean they are better than piston engines though, and it doesn't mean they are as reliable. Doesn't matter who builds them or tunes them, they still don't produce as much HP reliably as a V8. If that was the case, no one would have bothered to swap an Ls1 into one, now would they? But all kinds of people are doing it now... you think there might be a good reason for that? Maybe because the advantages of a V8 outweigh the disadvantages compared to the factory rotary engine.

Personally I just don't like working on rotarys. they're annoying.

Let me guess your subscriptions are

Honda Tuning, Modified, Import Tuner, Super Street, Motor Trend & GM High Tech Performance. That use of "like" in your post made me think you were unsure if it was 4 or 5 or even 6 so i just stuck in the token domestic mag.
