Ford cuts 900 jobs as Mustang sales drop

DETROIT–Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday that it plans to lay off 900 workers at the Michigan plant that makes the Mustang, after slow sales last year due to the tough economy and competition from the new Chevrolet Camaro, which is made in Oshawa.

Ford will reduce shifts from two to one in July at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Mich. The plant, which is jointly owned with Mazda Motor Corp., also makes the Mazda6 mid-size sedan.

The plant employs nearly 2,300 people. Most of the layoffs will be hourly manufacturing workers, but some salaried staff also will be cut, Ford spokeswoman Marcey Evans said.

Evans said there was significant downtime at the plant last year and Ford can get the volume it needs from one shift. Mustang sales fell 27 per cent last year, in part because of competition from the Camaro, which went on sale in the spring and came within 5,000 cars of outselling the Mustang. The Camaro hasn't outsold the Mustang since 1985. Mazda6 sales were down 34 per cent.

Evans says a majority of the workers will be offered positions at other plants. Ford currently has around 600 workers on indefinite layoff across the U.S. Those workers and the ones to be laid off at Flat Rock will have the first opportunity to take jobs at facilities that are hiring.

The company has been trying to thin the ranks of hourly workers, most recently offering buyout packages to all 41,000 U.S. hourly workers in December. Around 1,000 workers took similar buyout offers last year.

They need to be sneaky like Chrysler and NOT show the next gen Cherokee model at the auto show, in order to move the 2010 units on the ground. The downside is that everyone who buys a 2010 is never going to buy a Chrysler again.

I bought mine almost totally because of the looks. Loved it over the Trailblazer. I'll definitely be running it into the ground now. But also because Chrysler has WAY overpriced GC's. A comparable '10 model to my '06 is like $10k more at MSRP. WTF. Way to go Chrysler.

yeah, and thats likely the only press it will receive, via "leaked" spyshots. I have only seen a very small number here in Detroit, and I live right by Chrysler HQ. That tells me they are even limiting the number on the road with employees... its just a really unethical sales tactic.

No joke, there's a douche on the Jeep forums I go to who did that with his V6 GC.... spent way too much money for the whole 9... kit, wheels, springs, exhaust, roof rails, even put the badges on. And he's totally convinced himself it's an SRT8.

I'm not sure if it's unethical or if they're just embarrassed that the best they could come up with is something that looks like a bastardized version of the last generation in the front and the current generation in the rear. And they've done a terrible job of marketing the diesel in the US. From what I've heard of the European version the Blutech is a very capable setup. I don't understand why we as Americans are so uneducated/undereducated on these clean burning diesel technologies.

I don't see anything wrong with putting some of the kit on, as long as you don't think that it makes it faster
