Truck dispute
hey all,
im lookin at getting a truck for my second vehicle and i don't know what to go with. Its gonne be 4X4 and extended cab either way. Im just in dispute either between: Ford Ranger 4.0L V6 or Chev S-10 4.3L V6 (or the sister gmc sonoma) I was looking at full size but for what i'll be doing, It'll be overkill and a waste of money. Don't really wanna go foreign, but im willing to take a look if there reliable and worth it. I've looked at both, I've test drove both and can't decide. help me out here please. |

Help us out and tell us what you are going to use it for. I have a friend with a 4.0 Ranger and she has had very few issues with it. Another buddy has a 4 cyl S-10, while the powertrain is different I can say he has had no issues with anything that would carry over to the v6. Yet another friend has a 4.3 in his Silverado, it has ok power but is in a 1/2 ton truck and therefore does not do exactly what is needed of it. It can tow modest loads and haul gear. However, I think it would work very well in the smaller lighter chassis without someone expecting it to do the work of a v8. All that said, I am a GM guy and prefer the s-10 but I don't think you can go wrong either way.
What year for each and how many miles? That also may help get you more advice.

What do you mean by overkill by getting a full size. A full size truck, especially 4x4 and extended cab will give you more interior room and probably comparable gas mileage. Also if you get a full size truck you will have plenty of friends always wanting you to haul stuff for them. Just for reference my brother in law had a 90's Nissan 4x4, extended cab and he was only getting about 15 MPG on a good day, he got an '03 Chevy Duramax and now gets close to 20 mpg.

I'd go with ford. Only problem with the 4.0 motor is the tranny is junk.

gmc sierra denali all the way. lots of room, 6.0L v8 giving all the power he'll ever need, and you're still supporting gm that way

well, i'm going to be apprenticing for an electrician soon, and the place im doing it at, i'll be basically working with contractors after a house/building is built. so, i'll be hauling tools, cable, etc. my price range is limited. i would love to have an f-150 with a the v8 or a newer sierra or silverado z71. but i can't afford em. at least not with decent mileage. i may be able to get an older c/k1500 with a 350, but i'll be paying more in gas. i heard the manual tranny in the 4.0 is bad, not the automatic. im gonna keep looking. i'll prob go with the chev or gmc. but i fi see a hell of a deal, i aint passing it up. thanks all.

I was unaware you owned one. I've been keeping my eye out for one for some time. Love those trucks.
