There seems to be a big idea going around that since Mobil1 changed their oil base stocks, they aren't as "true" of a synthetic as they once were and as a few still are. That's a really quick synopsis and I don't know how much validity to it there is but supposedly there was even a lawsuit involved. Engines and oil and filtration technology have come so far over the past 50 years that I think that as long as a person regularly changes any brand of oil and filter they will be fine. Oil and filter is one of the cheapest "mods" that anyone can do themselves and in fact "has" to do regularly and I think that's why there seems to be a pretty solid preoccupation with brand preference.

I've done several tests through that company for both my cars and the service has been great so far. I get the results very fast. Gonna start getting some samples for my roommates bimmer too.

just fyi, you have to take the sample with the oil still warm after you've just been running the engine a while. If you let the oil cool and sit, stuff in it separates and they don't get an accurate test result.

Alright question. I am at 141,000. The only oil leaking is the pan, and i need to tighten that. Should i stick with mobil 1 or switch to a high mileage oil?

You can do both. Mobil 1 High Mileage Oil.

You could probably run that oil to 7k, and ditch the fram... they are the worst filter on the market. Get a NAPA gold, A/C delco, or Mobil1 filter instead.

FYI the new ac delco filters arent all that great. I got lucky and still have some older of the olders ones but I am going to use Wix/Napa Gold filters after those are gone

Exactly, the new delco filters are junk compared to the older ones. I always open them up before I buy them to make sure they were made in the USA. I forget where the newer ones are made, but the quality is junk.

Amsoil and K&N filters are suposed to be good, but then again come with a premium price.

Interesting. I haven't used an A/C delco filter in a while so I didn't know that, but back when I used to use them they were still pretty good. Sucks for A/C delco, but I guess they figured the average person doesn't know the difference and they could save some cash.

Haven't used one myself but I watched a testing/manufacturing video from Royal Purple on how they make their filters and it seems like a pretty impressive process.

I still use Castrol Edge. I wish they made it in a 0W-30 though. I use either Wix, Bosch, K&N or Mobil 1 filters, nothing else.

i switched from R.P to Edge this fall for 2 reasons. first is money, and second is simply i wanted to try it. i changed my oil filter last week and when i went to add more oil, i couldnt get the cap off. had to get a screw driver and pry it up. finally when i got the cap off, there was a sludgy orangish buildup on the bottom of the cap, and the threads. i have no idea wtf caused this, but i have never ever had this happen with R.P. so needless to say i'm going back to R.P, and probably doing a engine flush as well.

oh also i either use A/C delco pf47, or Napa Gold 1036. both are oversized.

You couldn't pay me to use Royal Purple oil in my ride

Patman on BITOG & various LS1/Corvette forums had them send him free cases of Royal Purple to test.
He put it in is wife's daily driver Honda Civic (not his C5 LS1 Corvette), & that stuff sheared to sh1t !
This was shown twice using UOA (Used Oil Analysis).

I have heard of this colour before, after changing to a new type of synthetic motor oil (but not the sludge build-up).
It was the new synthetic motor oil cleaning out what was left behind from previous oils in the motor.
So, I would say that Castrol Edge has nothing to do with it causing it; but causing it to clean out your engine.
This could last for like 2 oil changes.

so ur saying change the oil and go back to Edge. that makes sense but i hope you can understand my distrust. whatever the hell was on my oil cap wasnt suppose to be there. and i have a hard time believing RP could have left that much crap behind. also this didnt happen when i switched from RP to Amsoil for a little while. i had no problems with amsoil, it was just too expensive.

isnt royal purple meant for high performance/high heat or built motor applications?

anyway, a lotta guys i know are switching to shell rotella t synthetic. its fairly inexpensive and uoa turn back better than most synthetics sold today. ill let mike jung chime in about it
