I'm just blunt and to the point. I hate seeing work half assed due to money issues.

I'm told that you can get a few more weeks of life out of your cat if you lift the car and bang on the cat with a hammer. It may loosen some of the junk up and allow it to pass but you'll still need to get a new one. That's what was suggested to me when mine clogged and I had to wait for a new one to be shipped to Germany. Unfortunately, I got that advice a little late and the backpressure had already broken the head off of 2 of the exhaust manifold bolts. Ended up having to take the heads off to drill them out and it cost me over $2500 for all the work that was done (included an LIM upgrade to the new metal gaskets because that was what actually clogged my cat in the first place.)
If your local Autozone sucks, you can just have them ship you the part from somewhere else. Just select to have it shipped to your home rather than a local store. Even here in Germany I can get stuff from Autozone in about a week so they have pretty fast shipping. Also, I love Autozone because they are one of the very few companies that give free shipping to an APO address. Not many companies out there that will support the military even when it costs them money. They have made me a lifetime customer on that fact alone.

could even make it worse. how bout this. if money is an issue cut yours off take it to a core guy or recycler and use that money to buy an aftermarket cat. or steal one off some 1 elses. since cutting or gutting is already illegal why not throw in theft. |

First off, banging on your cat is a really REALLY bad idea! It's not going to loosen up any carbon deposits. It will however break the ceramic matrix inside and plug it up even worse. Second, there are no exhaust manifold bolts. There are however studs with nuts on them... and there is no possible way that back pressure caused any of them to break. There isn't enough force. The engine couldn't even begin to make that much back pressure much less run with that much. Broken exhaust manifold studs are pretty common if they are old and never been removed. They get rusty, and sometimes crack just from age and from the vibration of the engine and weight of the exhaust, or they get broken when you try and take them out and they are rusted in place. To the OP, you can find OEM direct fit replacement cats much cheaper than buying the actual factory piece from the dealer. You can also get a universal replacement cat with a 2.25" inlet and have it welded to the stock downpipe at a muffler shop relatively cheaply.
