What is the purpose of having an upgraded cam? I'm asking a question.

I will answer this for you Rootie. Hope you don't mind, and feel free to add.

A cam will, depending on specs give you a shorter duration for more torque and some are longer for more horsepower. compare the numbers to stock to find out more. A good cam will give more lift and duration, which in turn gives more fuel and air in and out, and the whole reason fuel injection is so good is that the ecu make air- fuel adjustments from what its reading from the MAFS

Torque production comes from increasing low lift flow, increasing low rpm port velocity, and increasing the dynamic compression ratio. This is all accomplished by optimizing the cams ramp angles, lobe separation, duration, and lift. What this means is that it is a big upgrade to a lot of internals. HP and TQ numbers will go up. Typically you will need new valves maybe a beehive valve spring, pushrods. Not always needed but good to replace with the cam.

Pretty much any stock motor out there can benefit from further tuning after the cam. Engineers tune ecu's to meet the temperature extremes, and also tune a margin of safety to compensate for randomly low octane fuels. Their cars have to be warranted, so a margin of safety is always a concern. For this reason, there is usually some areas on the maps that are just conservative. This means that car companies play it on the safe side using some of the least amount of stress parts the can come by to keep the car out of the shop for the longest time. They also want the customer to have a smooth ride. As you get more extreme with the cam, the lope can make the car ride rough at real slow speeds or when sitting still. Real extreme cams will make the car engine die/stall when sitting still because of how extreme but they also run like a bat out of hell when in motion. Nothing wrong with an aftermarket cam. those companies just free up the potential in the engine that is already there.

^ x2

and this particular cam has a nice lope and will occasionally rock the vehicle at idle but I think that's nasty coming from a malibu! also powerband starts around 3000rpm and goes to around 7k i believe. so low end kinda sucks with this cam, not gonna lie. so if you're trying to race digs will suck. rolls are where its at. 1st gear 20-30mph roll will put you in your seat till 2nds gone. the gears in these trans fall on their face after 2nd gear. 3rd and 4th are far too large to get any kind of good acceleration. thats what i noticed at least
