The Grand Ma has a weak start with a good battery...

Okay, the past week my car has been giving an oddly weak start. It's not consistent, but it doesn't help that I have a miss at WOT between 4200-4600rpms. Plugs are going to be changed in a few months, but what could be the source of a weak start? Battery is fine, cranking voltage is good, and the alternator is charging the battery properly. Signs of an ailing starter? Crank or cam sensor? I only have troublecodes for my annoying P0420 code, and the misfire at WOT.

Never tested the starter directly.

It's a 2003, with 152K on the clock.

Yeah Chris I would have it checked. Any of the big box part stores. Do it for free.

How exactly? There's almost zero access to the starter from the engine bay...and I really don't feel like yanking out the damn thing unless it's getting replaced.

You have to take it off...

Two bolts for the inspection/access overs (12mm)

Two bolts holding it to the block (15mm)

Two wires with one 13mm nut

One wire with a 8mm nut...

10 minutes.

That doesn't fix my case of not giving a fock.

But seriously, if it's the starter, I'll deal. I get wholesale prices on parts, and have access to a lift at work. It does have 152K on the starter, so I'm not exactly surprised it's a possibility.

Yup, original. Has that distinct original Delco sound on startup.

The starter has the Delco tags on it as well, and I never saw work for starter replacement in the car's work history in the small amount of paperwork that came with it.

locoman99 is infamous around these parts, but not in a good way
I have seen this before. Perhaps the ignition switch is not being turned with enough force to start the car. One fast test you can do is find soneone with less limp wrist to start the car and see if that causes it to start quicker.

if its a weak crank but your holding a batt charge its 90% your starter because if it were the alt your batt would drain away just replace the starter i think i paid 60$ for a new on and its pretty simple to change out

Might as well update:

It was the starter. Died in the middle of February. $130 and a week later, it lived again. Luckily, my mom acquired a new/used car, so I wasn't stuck driving the 94 Sentra death trap. Instead I cruised around in an 03 PT Cruiser Limited. Leather, heated seats, power everything, very nice sound system...I didn't mind at all.

That's in kilometers.

So in reality that's about 86,000 miles.
