Cold Air Intake Questions

I was just looking at air intakes for my GA, and i need to know a few things about them.

-do they put too much pressure on the engine?

-Which would brand would be the best?

-How much would it cost?

-Does it do any more for the car than Ram Air? ( I heard Ram Air is useless)

-Will it make my car not work so hard to pass on the highway?

A link as where to find the your recommendation would be awesome.

Well man, this has been beat to death at least 5 times, so I'll give you the short version...

The filter itself is the most important thing: Spring for the K&N. You can buy the 3 piece "chrome intakes" version off eBay, and toss their cheap filter, throw the K&N in it's place, and call it a day.

You'll be alright with one, they're safe. Makes a good sound effect if nothing else

nope license pic online not a good idea. but curious is there a set mile range you can only drive?

also to answer your question search Ebay from "grand am 3 piece cold air intake" and just buy the cheapest with a K&N filter. as pipe is pipe so $300 is too high, round $50 perfect

Any of these will work. There just different brands and Piping is piping. Just get a Spectre or K&N filter at Autozone or Advanced and dump the cheap one it comes with.

I bought one from mp before he got goofy. I should have just purchased aluminum tubing and bends and made one - the routing is simple, and silicone couplers can be had anywhere. I refuse to pay K&N prices - I can get the same cool noise, negligibly better airflow and subpar filtration (vs paper elements) at lower cost from S&B.

-do they put too much pressure on the engine?

No.

-Which would brand would be the best?

Most of the "brands" we all bought, no longer exist due to shady business practices. Like those said before, ebay is best. Two big pointers tho: check the seller's feedback first, and ONLY get a 3-piece (I have experience with the super cheap ebay cai's..which require cutting into your vehicle..they aren't plug and play..and that aint cool).

-How much would it cost?

Like most of these guys said, shoot to spend around $50 or so on it. A good K&N filter will run you about the same, if you want to save a little money on the filter and still get good performance look into S&B, you won't find them at your local autozone tho..it will have to be an online purchase.

-Does it do any more for the car than Ram Air? ( I heard Ram Air is useless)

The way Ram Air is supposed to work, it's supposed to deliver the air straight into the engine..if you look at your "ram air" under your hood..you'll see it goes pretty much everywhere through that insane maze of tubing before finding it's way to the engine..kinda defeats the purpose..

-Will it make my car not work so hard to pass on the highway?

As a young driver, exercise some caution..no need to pass anyone on the highway unless its some moron in a tractor..and even then it won't take much to pass him.

Gonna go out on a limb and guess your first car has high mileage? A simple test I would do to see just how much "power" has been lost from the engine, fill your gas tank up, do some highway driving with the cruise control locked at 60mph (or whatever the limit is), fill up again later..divide total miles driven by gallons of gas added. These cars are good for 28-29mpg (highest I've heard of was 31mpg I think) on the highway..if you are getting significantly less..run a search on here for Sea Foam and read up. It's a much cheaper fix for a stock vehicle and imo, at the age of 14, save your money for fuel/repairs.

A link as where to find the your recommendation would be awesome.

I find it encouraging that there are still kids left in America that:
1) Still put importance into how well the car goes, not just how well it shows.
2) Still drive and mod American cars!
This behavior is to be encouraged! So I say: More power to you kid!
Here is a link to an article that I know you will like where they did mild mods to an 02 GAGT, then dynoed it, then ran it on the 1/4 mile:
http://www.highperformancepontiac.co...s/viewall.html

Moderators, it's a cool article. I wonder if it deserves it's own thread?
Regards,
Eric
