That's just stupidity talking right there. No human being can control a car as well as properly programmed ABS and traction control in bad conditions. We simply don't have the sensitivity, senses, and reaction speed of a computer system.

Even talented and professionally trained drivers can become surprised and lose control. So even if you're Mark Stielow with mudflaps, when you're juggling a McTaco Supreme in one hand and arguing on the phone with your wife/girlfriend/bookie/whatever and trying to listen to the weather and traffic report guy on the radio and you're coming around a corner and the FedUps truck in front of you starts to jack knife and you drop your McTaco in your crotch and your bookie is yelling WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU DOING LAST SATURDAY?? and you overcorrect and now the speeding Chevy Subdivision that was tailgating you is zipping by sideways outside your side window, those electronics may well be the difference between a good story to tell at the bar later on versus wild off-road tilt-a-whirl impression that culminates in meeting a few friendly EMTs.

I don't understand this juxtaposition wherein hi tech smartphones and power tools and what not are manly, but ABS and ESC are somehow emasculating.

Sorry Chaos, nothing personal, I just felt a good rant coming on and you happened to be there.

I like the color combo dude, nice!

My .02 from the abs/trac talk---> FAR TOO MANY PEOPLE rely on "oh my car does ____________" than drive carefully, and actually pay attention to what they're doing. That's my main complaint, knowing how to do it is a big problem, too many drivers don't, and just use the car's system to assumedly override their lack of skill.

This is very true, kind of like the 'invincible' perception when driving a 4WD.

Still wouldn't mind having AWD. Seen many STi's pulling cars out of the snow.

As for the assists, the traction control systems in these cars suck. ABS won't save a car from a spin, you're thinking about stability control.

Plus, I've been in the sort of situation where my car spun in the snow, on an un plowed highway with traffic. I knew the limits of my Grand Am, I knew what it would do pushed beyond its limits. When I hit a small snow drift in the road, I felt the back want to come around.

Sure enough, it does. I didn't even panic, despite the car spinning 180 degrees and now facing the car behind me. Front wheel drive cars being so nose heavy, I turned the wheel to the right and the car swung back around 180 degrees. Because of the speed I was going, the engine was cut out, but I was still able to slap it in neutral and pull over.

If you know how to drive, you don't need assists like that.

Practice doing reverse J-turns in big enough parking lots, panic situations like that won't end with an accident.

For all the hours I spent messing around in huge empty parking lots during the winter with the GAGT, I found the limits of the car and went beyond them to see what it would do. My favorite lot to go to was at the Sears Auto I used to work at. Just a HUGE open space, could get up to 45mph without worry of curbs or light poles. Just yanking the e-brake and seeing how long I could keep a drift was fun.

Speaking of snowy parking lot fun, it snowed a good amount yesterday, decided to find a lot and see how the Honda is. The Accord weighs 105lbs less than the GA, different e-brake system (spring loaded caliper versus the GA's spring loaded drum setup) so the back wheels lock up quicker and harder, meaning the car will spin more than the GAGT did. After about an hour, I got used to it. Having much less torque and a stronger e-brake, my mindset for the GAGT's way of driving just wasn't gonna work. But the only lot I found wasn't that big, only got up to 20mph.

It's snowing again today, I may head out to that Sears lot to tonight to really get a feel for what the Honda is like. Plus, it's fun! I know the cops out in that precinct, they honestly don't mind if its just a few cars. As they've told me, they'd rather see people mess around in an empty lot rather than on public roads.

Reminds me of a time when I was in the air force, in texas driving a rented honda with 2 others hit black ice faced one ditch did a 180 faced the other then straighted back and kept going, the others were ****ting themselves and afterword said they were very glad I was from North Dakota

Awesome. As long as you're calm and collected during a situation like that and you're familiar with your car, you can get out of most bad situations like that.
