You're both right. I lived in Rock Springs and worked in Wamsutter for nearly a year. Entirely different compared to the areas mentioned above. Visited Laramie a few times and it was nice. I live in a similar place now.

Nothing wrong with a BMW. Of course they will cost quite a bit in maintenance but then again most German cars will. w makes some beautiful cars. Personally I'm still a fan of the e46.

I wouldn't say they're junk or crappy cars by any means but I would never buy one. Not to mention 90% of its owners base are tools. Not saying OP is one.

Like if someone where to give me one for free I would obviously take it but I would never buy one if I had the money. I like to build upon "underpowered" but good enough platforms rather then have one that is already overpowered , sounds stupid but meh. Not to mention simple maintenance on one isn't cheap, but that can be solved if you're mechanically inclined and have the tools.

I'll consider an e46 when I'm in the market for a newer car later this year. But I'd still rather go the GTO route if it's possible.

So, by your expert logic, an M3 that is underspec'd by ~100hp and even more torque when compared to others in it's class (Merc S63, Audi RS4[similar power], Nissan GT-R, Corvette Z06, Porche 911 Turbo) is actually overpowered? And because 90% are tools, even me included if you want, then the car must be overrated.

You've provided nothing constructive to my inquiry, except to show your only actual knowledge are the stereotypes you have gleaned which are high maintenance cost and owners being tools.

I'll gladly pay the maintenance cost on this and my Audi S4 for years to come. It's truly immaterial how much more it is when speaking general maintenance. My oil changes were every 3k at $50 for the GAGT. My oil changes now are $115 each at 5-6k miles (M will be close to the cost of the GAGT changes), and could have gone longer per Blackstone Labs analysis. $150 vs $230 a year? Please. You'd be a fool not to pay the $80 premium per year to upgrade. Every car has wear and tear and the parts cost difference is immaterial as well if you know how to source and procure. And also you have mentioned, if you are mechanically inclined, it's not so bad. It boils down to how you take care of it, how you drive it etc. Zero issues with the S to date. But if you have qualms about the cost of basic maintenance that is virtually immaterial in price then that is your choice and that's fine. Some people just have different priorities and do not want to pay extra, no matter how much.

But, I'm a comparison shopper, and I will always stack up dollars to what I'm getting for my money...

I had a Grand Am. Looking back, I don't know what I was thinking. I didn't know any better. I put more money into that Grand Am (purchase price, maintenance, mods) than I have for the S4 (purchase price plus general/preventative maintenance over the last 40k miles) and it STILL wasn't half the car the S4 is now. Find any of the cars above and see if you can't take them for a test. Take some fast corners during your drive and tell me you can bring an "underpowered" car up to those accelerating, handling and braking standards.

I knew there would be a responding paragraph. It's a personal opinion. Sorry I still think they're overrated. There are stereotypes for a reason, like I said, was not saying you where one specifically.

Sorry I don't make bank like you do hah.

BTW its not like I'm saying I could bring the GA up to those standards. GA had nothing to do with this.

I know two people that has/had them. One person who still has one. Its always got problems or is broken down so she doesnt drive it.

The other my buddy had. It was a 2004 330xi. One day his axle shaft popped out of place (102k miles) and at 104k miles... well thats when all hell broke loose. Jumped timing. Bent all rods. And cracked 4 pistons.

Imo they are decent cars until 90k miles then at that point id want it gone. Seems they arent reliable or worth having after 100k miles.
