What Do I Do????????

(Sorry for the Caps) I dont know what I should do. In November I ordered my Eagle Alloy 077 Chrome 18" Wheels from tiresplus. They came in and sat in my room till about a week and a half ago. When I could afford tires (Kuhmo Supras) I had them put on. They look great and ride just ok, slight wobble. After 75 miles I went back to Tirersplus and had them re-torqued like I was saposed to. Well I just went to go take them off so that I could paint my calipers and I couldnt get them off. The lug nuts were soooooo tight it was nuts. I managed to get 4 of the 5 lug nuts off but I just couldnt get the fifth off. So I borrowed a tool (pic 1) to get them off and the "spoke" (pic 2) ( I really dont know what the names for these things are) broke off inside of the lugnut. (pic 3) So my question is: What do I do? Is it Tirespluses falt? Is it my falt? I mean what should I do? I really rreally need help ASAP. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to my world of the Eagle 077!!! Although my lug nut got stuck in the hole of the wheel causing the threads on the stud to shear off near the back of it.

Info for you...AN AIR WRENCH SHOULD NEVER BE USED AT ALL! If someone else is applying your wheels make sure they know that, but me, I don't let anyone else take them off or put them on because they are tricky.

Through the wheel on, make sure the other 4 are tightened to 100lbs torque, and drive it to a place to get the stud fixed. Will cost about $75. Don't drive like an idiot either.

My guess is that someone may have cross threaded the lugnut. If that's not the case, then someone got wayyyy to aggressive with the air wrench. Are you sure when you used the air wrench you didn't have it in reverse? In other words, you were tightening it more? An air wrench is a bad idea for any set of wheels. They should always be torqued with a torque wrench to the proper specs. You should also hand thread the lugnuts on until they are started before you use ANY wrench on them. A breaker bar may have solved your problem better than that air wrench. You could also have tried penetrating lubricant to get them loose.

I posted the procedure to replace these yourself on the board but someone said it can't be done without removing the entire hub... I honestly don't know if that's true or not. Good luck.

It's not an air-impact gun, it's an electric one

Electric or neumatic it is still an impact gun!!!

If your handy it's not that bad to replace at all.

It was infact the place that "retorqued" those lugs for ya.

If you want to do it yourself it will only cost ya like $5 bucks and 20 mins of your time. Pm me if you need help.

Maybe BMOBYLE can elaborate on this but I posted repair info in another thread here:

http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/showt...&highlight=hub

Someone said you need to remove the entire hub assembly although I'm not sure that's true or not? The service manual didn't say anything about that sooooo.... Good luck with the fix.

Pixer......

It's an EASY fix yourself, if you need part numbers or info on how to replace let me know. I sheered off 3 just by tighting them by hand ( that means with a 4-way lug wrench )

PM me, if you want help !!!!!!

SHlT...I'm willing to go at it myself and fix the wheel stud. I got a quote of $75 to fix it. 95% of that was labor charge!

I'm pretty good working with wheels, sooooo maybe I can do it. Dunno if I have appropriate tools though, no C-clamp thingy I hear of.

Anyone think Western Auto ws bulllllll****ting me on the hub removal being necessary?

I just broke a front lug on my '96 GA SE.
Never used any air tools to rotate tires.

Going to pickup a stud today (hopefully)
and repair it this weekend. I have done
it on trailers, but not cars, but friends tell
me that it will not be a big deal.

htis happened to me when i was out in michigan, just went to napa, bought a new stud, pounded the broken one out, put the new one through as far as it would go and then put some qashers under the lug nut and pulled it through by tightening the lug.. worked perfect..

and mine happened cuz the threads got cross threaded and stripped..

Reminds me of when we did brake-work on my car the week before it was totalled. For some odd reason, one of the studs was fused on like a muv.....we finally had to just snap it off.

What Mfuller and I did was hammer it out, and put a new one in. Worked just fine....for the next week.

Yep, those were way over torqued. You can see the threads on the other ones are all mangled up too. I'd replace all of them that look like that and get some new lug nuts too. Don't let anyone use an impact gun on your wheels! Beside the fact that it'll damage the studs, they can also scratch your finish. Torque 'em yourself. Also, if you do it right you shouldn't need to constantly re-torque them. I've checked mine after going and driving a short distance and they never change.

What size socket do I need to remove the hub?
I picked up a 1-1/8 and it was still not enough!

Do not remember any bigger deep sockets at
Sears, but I might go check again tomorrow...
(Or break down and pay someone to fix it).
