Average Fuel Pump Life Expectancy ---- What Have Your Experiences Been?

I'm trying to figure out at what point does one need to start including the fuel pump in their thought process when they are trouble shooting. I've already done a search.

I'm waiting for the fuel pressure testers at Harbor Freight to go on sale so I can get one. In the meantime......

It would be helpful to me and all those who read this thread in the future if everybody were to post how many miles were on their N-body when their pump failed. That way we could perhaps get a general idea of what the average lifespan of these buggers is.

Also wondering if the later cars received a better pump. If so, when did that happen?

I think if one runs their car out of gas and makes the pump work with no fuel in it for even a short period of time it shortens said pump's lifespan considerably. It's just my theory though. Does anybody else agree?

On these cars, it is such a RPITA to change the pump because the tank has to be dropped. So it would be nice to not make the mistake of changing it needlessly.

i fill up my '99 when the gas get to a quarter tank. although there was this one time i literally ran out of gas on my way to the station...
i changed the fuel line filter at 100k miles, and i've still got the original pump with 108k miles on it.

Thanks for the responses!

Well so far we are all over the map. Just barely over 100,000 miles to over 200,000 miles. Quite a range. We need more samples and hopefully a pattern will emerge.

When I last drove my car, my factory fuel pump was still going at 135,000 miles.

I don't think there really is a set pattern. It probably depends a lot on how hard you are on it. I've heard that running the tank low frequently, especially in hot weather, can shorten their life because the fuel in and around the canister they sit in cools them. I haven't heard any concrete verification of that though, or anything about how much it shortens their life by.

The fuel pump in my car got replaced twice within 4 months when the car was about 2 years old, but it wasn't really a pump failure that caused the problem. Something electrical in the unit was making the pump not kick on in hot start conditions. GM released an updated unit in 2002 that started getting used for warranty replacements and installed in new cars at the factory. First pump I got was left over old stock and the second one was the new unit and it has worked fine ever since it was installed. Pump itself probably has about 70k miles on it. Harder than average miles since I'm running higher peak fuel pressure than most and double stock power output that it's supplying fuel for.

Mine went at roughly 280,000km(174,000 mi). I tend to run my car down close to empty before filling up though. Swapped in a Milzy Walbro pump as a nice replacement.

Mine went out early apparently since it was only around 50K-60K miles when it died. I normally went to the gas station when the tank got under halfway (I lived in Germany at the time and on base prices were about 1/4 what off base prices were so I always topped off well before it became urgent.)

I don't really know why it went out so soon but the replacement one is still going strong and my GAGT is around 125K miles now. We still fill up around half to 1/4 tank though just to keep the wife in the good habit of keeping an eye on the gauge.

Do they usually make some noise first before they go out completely?

im sure in most cases no.

I always let my fuel pump prime before I start the car.

idk if anyone else here does that, but if you turn the key to the ON position you will hear a vrrrrrr noise for about 3 seconds, after it shuts off I start the car. that's just me.
