Watch those Stealth/3000GT twins. Most of them have been run to hell and back, and repairs are often expensive and sometimes complicated. Every time I have been involved with one, it has been unpleasant -- the auto trans is an oddball, PCM failures, problems with electronically controlled suspension...

If that Buick is supercharged, its probably the 3.8L out of the Grand Prix. Nice choice there

A budget would help us out a lot more. Don't even look at a taurus. Unless its a brand new ecoboost one, they are garbage.

I have already been looking for a replacement car just in case, and I have a few options. Could you guys tell me which ones are too far fetched and which ones are a reasonable replacement to a Grand Am SE?

1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix GT or GTP Coupe.
1999-2005 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi or GXP.
1994-1996 Dodge Stealth DOHC.
1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am GT Coupe.
1995-2005 Pontiac Sunfire Coupe.
1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero Sedan.
2000-2006 Ford Taurus SES or SEL.
2007-2009 Pontiac G5 GT.
1996-1999 Ford Taurus.
1988-1996 Pontiac Grand Prix Coupe.
1995-2002 Buick Riviera Supercharged.
1998-2004 Dodge Intrepid.
2001-2006 Dodge Stratus Special Edition.
1997-2002 Ford Escort ZX2.
2008-2009 Pontiac G8 Base, GT, or GXP.

I know thats a lot of cars, but I would like to know what the best option is going to be for me. Also, if you have a good idea for a car, please let me know. (as you can see I am trying hard to de-attach myself from my car, so please give me a little slack)
Judging by the house you have I'm sure $1k is nothing to your parents. But its good to see they are not spoiling you I guess?

Why are they skeptical about you and your dam car?

My friend has a 97 Rivi S/C. Nice cars but they look to boat-ish for my taste and are really heavy. Not to mention after hearing what he has to say about the aftermarket of them, which is pretty much none.

Well unless you have 15k+ you can rule out a G8. You could maybe get a base model for $10k+.

My siblings both have a grand prix and they have been great for them. My friend has an alero and he treats it pretty rough and it's still been reliable.

Honestly I'd just find out what the problem is first. Engine repairs can add up quick but maybe youll be lucky. I put $2k in repairs on my grand am this past winter. This included replacing the engine. That knocking sound you have could possibly be a stripped rocker arm. That's what I thought I had at first. I think I was quoted around $300 to repair a stripped rocker arm.

Haha how do you know what our house looks like? And not to be rude but you know nothing about our family. We have dealt with a lot more than you know.

And they are skeptical because we cant afford fixes like this one. Thats why they dont let me spend a lot on it.

And my budget is around $6000 unless my mom and dad dont want me to spend that much on a 2nd car.

Yeah I didnt think so on a G8. And hopefully it IS only a $300 fix, and save all the time and money.

To them, it's a dodge. Dodges are American. They don't really get the concept of clones. (Or whatever you call them)

honestly, they don't want to spend $1000 on a repair, but your budget for another car is six grand?!
You need to find out what the problem is with the car first before you start looking at buying something else. It might not be that expensive to fix, or it might end up being expensive to fix that engine but you could get a junkyard replacement engine for a couple hundred bucks.

I'd love to ruin your parents' grasp of "American" cars.

I mean, the G8 as we all know is a Holden (Austalian) the majority of Buicks are Opels/Vauxhaulls (German) the Chevy Cruze and Sonic were designed by Daewoo (Korean)...things like that.

I knew about the g8 and the cruze and sonic, but I had no clue about the buicks.

They don't want to spend money in an old car. That's why my budget is so high for a different one, so they can afford a newer model. Of course with any used car you don't know if it will break down, but they think it will be less of a chance that it DOES break down.

Hate to break it to you/them... but the Dodge Stealth is also an old car. Older than the grand am in fact. And you aren't going to find much that is much newer for only $6k. Used car prices are inflated these days because of demand.
