Thumbs down Back end rattle is horrid..

Okay, I was checking out my ride the other day. Ever since i've gotten my subs and amp, i've noticed that the trunk keeps the sound sealed very nicely and there was only a small rattle from the license plate. But when I was checking it out the other night, I noticed a HORRID rattle coming almost from the bumper area. I could not figure it out, but i'm sure its about time to get some kind of deader stuffed in the trunk. I have Dynamat in the rear deck and doors and I absolutely love it. Will Dynamatting fix my rattle problem on the outside though? I'm not sure if it will or not. Any help is appreciated!!

99% of outside rattle comes from the license plate. Do what I did. Take some double sided foam tape, and place it along the bottom edge of your plate. Then reattach and voila. no more noise!

See, I tried that though. My license plate is not completely flat..its actually bent up (i've had this since I had my first car at 16)

I held the license plate down and its still rattling on the inside of the bumper, like something behind it. I haven't the slightest clue what it is.

it's the bumper that vinbrates and sounds like junk right?
i had that. try this, when subs are on and trunk closed, press down in the middle of your bumper. thats how i figured out it was only my bumper making noises becuz after i did that the noises stopped. So i just did the *ghetto* move and cut up a painting sponge. i jammed it inbetween the bumper and underneath the area where the black rubber liner is along the trunk opening.
now the bumper is fine. if you dont wanna spend any money, there you go. tell me what happens or your thoughts.

So is it just the bumper rattling where the trunk closes do you think? It sounds like something around the license plate area, but not necessarily right there. Who knows.

Will Dynmatting the entire trunk insulate the bass more? I know when I shut the trunk, and open it, I can tell a difference, it hushes it alot when its closed. But I just hate the idea of rattle. I don't want to be "rattling" up to a stop light..

A year or so ago a couple people on yer had the same problem, here's what I told them to help, because it worked for me.
Let's say you took your bumper off the car, for whatever reason. There is a black plastic piece that attaches to the metal of the car underneath the bumber. This piece rattles like no tomorrow. With lesser amounts of bass it's not too bad, but larger amounts it gets insane. To fix this, put a piece of sounddeadener underneath it. this way if it vibrates, it won't be against the metal of the car. That is the easiest way. I'm sure you could secure it to the vehicle better other ways also. Or you can do what I did and create a whole new bumber mounting system, with custom welded metal brackets and whatnot. For systems with a very large amount of bass, this would be ideal to keep your bumper itself from vibrating excessively, and will cut down on vibration. But for the average system the dynamat solution will be fine.

Note: Unless you can get under the car and have very skinny hands(like a 6-year old) to reach up there, the bumper will need to come off to put the mat under the plastic piece. But it's not difficult at all.

BTW, it's always a good idea to sound deaden your trunk.
Hope you get rid of your rattles.

Hmm...this sounds like it may be it then! Cause it never rattles bad until low frequencies hit hard. Looks like I've got a solution then! Dynamatting the entire trunk will be time consuming, but its something I may have to do. It sucks cause my entire car has formed little rattles here and there now, and its disappointing, but you do what you gotta do I suppose. Thanks everyone for your help!!

"Dnamatting the entire trunk".... layer after layer of that stuff won't be NEARLY as effective as a few pieces of well placed deadener combined with other materials. Do a search in this subject, and you'll see a lot of good advice, as it has come up a lot.

For the first few seconds of the video, I wasn't sure. But at the end, when there was a close up of the trunk, yes it was. It's that black piece rattling, among a few other things. I will take pics ASAP sometime over the next few days to let you know what i'm talking about.

BTA, nice bumps there. Seems to hit pretty hard.

Man o man..my quarter panels do not jump like that! But when you went to the backend, it was definately like mine. The low end frequencies shake the hell out of the back piece. And I just think its kinda embarrasing and a little amature to roll up rattling. Its impressive when you can actually hear the bass, but not when you can just hear rattling.

I have a rattle/flapping on the right side of the trunk. Even when the lid is open it flaps. After much searching (i thought the noise was coming from the port) I found a valve of some sort that lets air out but not in. I think it is for when you have the windows open so that the air will go through the car.
That is my noisest piece.

yeah i hate that flap.. i think it may be for when you shut the trunk. that way when you shut it, it takes away the pressure..

Mike -
I agree, its pretty embarassing with the **** rattling like that..im working on fixing it.

Magilla -
It was on a friends cd i got from him at the last competition, so im not sure what its called.

Are you getting a rattling from the passenger side corner panel? There a vent back there just rip the carpeting in the trunk back a little and you'll see it. I removed mine and stuffed a towel in its place, people said that was stupid of me that the towel will get wet and grow moldy and stink my car up...blah it was like that for almost 2 years with no problems. My advice take that stupid vent out, dynamat the back of your license plate and the few problem areas in the trunk.

Nope, its directly in the back of the trunk and it sounds like its inside the bumper. Its horrid, I absolutely hate it. It sounds so amature and weak that my car has 6000 miles and sounds like its been through hell and back

As was said above, that "valve" is there to releive pressure when the doors or trunk are closed. All vehicles have something like that, located in different places. Either tape it off completely (which may cause the doors and/or trunk to be hard to close due to air pressure), or apply some foam tape under the "flap" part, so that when it moves from the bass, it doesn't get noisy.
