Brake Conversion

Ok guys/girls has anyone with a grand am se switched the rear drum over to rear disc without using a special kit. I saw a thread on here a while back about using grand am gt parts but it didnt say if any one has tried it or not. Please let me know.

There is a guy that has already done it over on GAOC. I plan to tackle this one as well in the spring. Pretty easy on the 99+ cars. Its only 5 bolts, the e-brake cable, and the brake line if I recall.

Wow, that would be a lot better than I had thought. Any idea who it was on GAOC, Wallflower?

EBlend, I knew it had been done before but I couldn't remember who on here had done it. If you got any pics pelase post them up. Or at least a list of parts and maybe instructions would rock.

What about the E-brake cable...can I use the one I have now or do I have to swap it with a different one?

I've heard of hte conversions using the same ebrake cable, but it wouldn't be hard to pull that part from a junker either...

One thing I noticed different so far looking in the GM parts catalog at work, the parking brake indicator is different between a GT and a SE.

Also, the cable going to the back of the brake is different but the front cable is the same.

Parking brake indicator? What's that? Also, if you could post a list of all the parts required for the swap that would help. Thanks!

*** All numbers are based on 99 SE2 V6 ***

Main Hub Assemby :
18041757 : Backing plate LH : QTY 1
18041758 : Backing Plate RH : QTY 1
18023050 : Hub bolts : QTY 8
18060632 : Knuckle LH : QTY 1
18060633 : Knuckle RH : QTY 1
18026272 : Caliper Brkt : QTY 2
18023069 : Caliper Brkt Bolts : QTY 4
18022952 : Park Brake Spring : QTY 2
11513699 : Park Brkt Screw : QTY 4
18025022 : Park Brkt LH : QTY 1
18025023 : Park Brkt RH : QTY 1
18043106 : Park Actuator LH : QTY 1
18043107 : Park Actuator RH : QTY 1

Raybestos Misc. Parts :
RC11081 : Loaded Rear Caliper LH : QTY 1
RC11082 : Loaded Rear Caliper RH : QTY 1
56629 : Rear Disc : QTY 2
770 : Park Brake Shoes : QTY 1
BH380580 : Rear Brake Line : QTY 2

BCA Hub Assembly :
512152 : Rear Hub Assembly : QTY 2

Simple swap instructions :
1. Disconnect Brake Line
2. Disconnect E-Brake Cable
3. Remove 2 Strut/Knuckle bolts
4. Remove Trailing Arm/Knuckle bolt
5. Remove Lateral Arm/Knuckle bolt
6. Remove Sway Bar/Knuckle bolt

You now have the entire rear drum assembly in your hands. Change rear brake lines and E-brake cable. Replace with GT Hub Assembly in reverse order.

** I have the exploded views and parts lists from the GM Parts computer, for both the drum and disc rear assemblies, however I do not have a scanner. The only part number I do not know is for the E-brake cables.

I would check the local junkyard (Yard locator) and see if they have wrecked GTs on the lot. Your price would almost certainly beat what you will pay at the dealer level for the above parts. I was quoted $250 for two complete disc hub assemblies. I plan to do this very soon myself. I think I will replace the calipers and park actuators with new parts to avoid the potential problems. I intend to buy new cables, hoses, and obviously the pads and rotors.
