Oil Capacity??? 4 0r 5 Qts?
Anyone change their own oil? How much do you put in? I usually put in 4 - 4.5 qts. I think 5 is too much and an overfull engine can be harmful.. Im running on 4 right now it looks fine. IT is hard to tell by the dipstick b/c the new oil is so clean its clear. Don't wanna mess up the engine with too little either.

The OM does say 4.5 But both of the GA's I've had have always taken a bit more than 4.5....If I drained her good a full fill-up would be 4 3/4 or even sometimes more.....

I have always used 4.5. I drain my oil and then take the filter off. After you take the filter off (if the front end is raised) you will see more oil come from the oil pan itself. Then fill the oil filter with as much as possible (usually takes a few pours) and then reattach. I always use 4.5 and I am right on the money according to the dipstick.

I always do. And also put a ring of oil around the seal to prevent siezure.
Does no one else fill the filter first? |

Yeah - I guess no one else does fill the filter, maybe I am just a wierdo
I don't know where I ever heard that, but I have had 3 Grand Am's and have done the same thing every 3-4000 miles for the last 100,000 miles ![]() |

i use a bit over 4 quarts. i also fill the filter a bit first. the reason why people do this is to get some oil into the filter before the engine starts otherwise its take a bit of time for the filter paper to absorb some oil before it starts flowing through it.

I have always "filled" the filter with oil before I put it on.... last 4 cars I've owned. I'm not sure how much it helps, but it's worth a try...

Nothing wrong with filling up the filter at all.
just a form of priming the engine. Not really needed on the LA1 though. Bmw recommends it. Used alot also with turbocharged applications. sometimes tapping the ignition is needed to. Most of the GM v6's take 4 1/2 quarts with the exception of a select few. Last edited by BMOBYLE; 05-21-2003 at 08:08 PM. |

4.5 quarts = 4.3L (for us metric Canadians
)Just wondering: How much more oil is needed if you use the PF-52 oil filter (instead of stock PF-47 oil filter)? Are we talking like about cup/250mL more of oil? [Just wondering...I'm having my oil changed tommorrow & will start using oversized PF-52 type oil filters. I just want to know how much of oil to bring (since I have cases of 1L bottles with 1-single opened bottle already with a 1/3 left)] |

(reply to mikejung)
Had a buddy of mine who did this all the time on his.
Don't remeber "exactly" but it wasn't much at all. You can just have the car ran for a good two mins after the oil change then shut it off and check the dip. top off what's needed. It still ain't gonna be that much though. |
