Facing of subwoofer

I was wondering if i could turn just my subs around in my box, not the whole box, so the cone would be facing outward, if you get what i am saying, i have a ported box. would it damage my subs, or would it increase how loud it is? i could have swore i have seen it done before and was wondering about it

Doing that does nothing. It is for cosmetic purposes only.

I think it is called inverted...right? I don't know if it would have any affect but if done right looks damn cool.

I'm confused you want to mount the sub the normal way with the magnet inside the box and the lip of the frame outside the box? No harm with that that is the way most subs are designed to be mounted. It will however affect your boxe's performance becuase you have just added all that volume of the magnet and the frame to the intereior of the box.

not true...... by inverting u are actually increasing the area on the inside of the box...or in other words makin the box bigger..... because the magnet isnt in there takin up room anymore.

so although u may not notice it.......... ur subs could end up being abit quiter.

I do agree with you here. If one took the SAME box and had the subs mounted on the inside THEN changed them to the outside, the sound would be different. Would it be noticeable? No, chances are to the average person, you would not notice. Now, as for my first comment in regards to that idea being cosmetic, let me explain it this way.

Most people who are deeply into subs, they do know what the specs should be for thier subs to make a box. I will use myself for example. I have 4 10" Audiobahn subs waiting to be installed STILL, . I know my specs for the subs and know the size of the subs. Now, knowing all this information, I could sit down and take the time to do all the calculating to come up with the dimenions I need to build my box. I doubt that I will actually use size of the magnet into consideration because it would be to difficult to calculate the exact space it would take up beings as it is odd shaped. Here is the way I am going to do it. I have 4 subs and figure that each sub is probably just over 5. cubic ft. I am likely just going to add an extra 2 cubic ft to my box.

By doing this, wouldn't that decrease a subs' power unless it was a ported box? Cause essentially, a subwoofer "pushes" air. But by pushing air INTO the box, wouldn't it deaden the sound?

all speakers push and pull air that is why they go in and out causeing rarefaction and compressoin which our ears interperet as sound.

silverbullet00- Which series of subs are you running? I can tell you how much space they take up.

I'm not sure what series they are. I bought them from my buddy. I told him he can keep them in his car until I get my box made. I'll ask him later on when I call him and I'll post it for you. I believe he said somewhere around 1.1 cubic ft. Also, what would the better way to hook them up for maximum sound?

if the subs are crappy little ones w/ stamped steel baskets and a magnet thats not big, you won't notice a difference... if they are like 100oZ magnets and big baskets, that's like ~.1 Ft^3..
that .1cubes isn't a lot, and prolly wouldnt even make that much a dif, it will make a SMALL dif though..
if you inverse mount it, reverse the polarity going into amp, so the signal is sent 180* out of phase.. this will compensate for the sub being faced the other way.. your output won't be affected

most people prolly couldnt tell if they had one sub only and it was out of phase.. invert mount is nice if you have nice baskets, magnets, etc to show off. i would really like to invert my evo-r, but thats alot of weight for screws to be holding in like that.. i plan on an invert mount between my truck seats cause its a reg cab toyota and it has almost no room at all to put in a sub. just make sure you have a nice seal around the sub/wood so that you dont have any unwanted noises do to leaks.. well im out to work.. later..

yea. see, if he has the same subs as I do(i also have 4 10's), they each take up .22 cu ft. add that up and ya got almost 1 cu ft lost to the subwoofers. And THAT can throw off the tuning frequency quite a bit in my opinion, as I forgot to include the displacement in my box and threw it way off. Of course I was building mine for SPL purposes and would like to know the specifics. In my case it threw everything off by about 3-4 hz

how do your bahns take up .22 Ft^3? that's like nearly impossible..

my eDk12 takes up .1 only....

actually, the spec sheet of the sub should give the basket/magnet displacement. heres my install with two inverted w6v2 subs.

how is that nearly impossible. audiobahn themselves say they take .22 cu ft each on the specs sheet. and the series above mine take .30 cu ft each. You can also go to their site and download the sheet for yourself if you don't believe me.

I noticed that my bass got tighter with the mag out but wether that is because of poor designing or a difference in box size (or my imagination even)
Those JL's look awesome.

When you invert the woofers, you lose a few 10ths of a Db, maybe a tad more depending on the woofer. The reason is very simple - with teh sub facing in, you have less cone area facing out. Not a huge difference in any event, it is only "useful" as a cosmetic bit.

A woofers spec sheet should include "woofer displacement", which is the space it takes up in the box. It'll range from .02 for a very small sub to .35 or so for a really beefy one.
