Gas Milage question (not what you think)

Yes, I know our gas milage sucks, My buddies bored out 350 (5.7 ltr) gets better millage than I do (he gets like 25-27 MPG) I have a 3.4 ltr 6 cyl... and his car is like 1000 pounds heavier...

After replacing my plugs with some NKG 2 prongs.. I'm finally getting about 22-23 MPG I was at about (18-20). I replaced wires and everything. I drive it sensible, I do get on it occasionally when I need to.

My question is (yes I'v done a search here) what is the main factor governing our poor millage? I have a K&N drop in filter. I was thinking of modifing the ram air box to actually provide cold air... why is it sitting on top of the radiator?? And make the ram air box less restrictive, that ram air.. what a joke. What other mods would someone advise me doing? My 2.4 Ltr 98 GAGT got 35+ MPG... Id like to be at 25 or so with this car. Is it possible??

Thanks!

-Jay

My 2000 GT gets at worst 21.5mpg and the best I've gotten since I bought the car back in September is about 25mpg.

I'd love to get 4mpg more just by changing plugs, but I don't think it's gonna happen.

Swap in a 3800? I regularly get 30-32 MPG with my GT, it was one of the factors in buying a GP over a GA this time.

Sure it is. First thing, and this makes a huge differnce, Gearing. Your buddies V-8 probably has a numerically lower number final drive than you do. At 70 MPH, what RPM are you turning? What RPM is he turning? An GA SE will get better gas mileage than a GT because of gearing.
The other big think, slow down.

Ok, numerically lower gear ratios, makes sense to me. The only tranmission work I'v done was a rebuild of a 85 dodge aries tranny... are there aftermarket parts to change these ratios? @ 75MPH Its probably somewhere from 2500 to 3000 RPMs.. I dunno what his would be.

It did... =) no.. hehehe One of the plugs.. all original from the factory, one of them in particular was fouled to all hell and I think perhaps it may not have been fireing 100% of the time, hence the reason I thought I do a plug change. This is on a 99 GAGT w/ 56K miles

Are you sure about this? My GT only pulls 2250 RPMs at 75 MPH and 3000 RPMs at 100 MPH all while in overdrive!

I average 26 in town and 31 on the highway. Sure I don't redline the car from every stop light, but I don't drive like grandpa either.

oh yes the 3800 gets better gas milege. I went to our cottage in my mas gpgt ( becasue it has a hitch and i dont have one) and I got 30 mpg for the 80 mile drive. The next weekend I made the same trip in my car and only got 27 mpg.

Do you all realize that GA's gas tank is really really small? It's only like 13 gallons.

My '99 GA has a 15 US gallon/56.8L gas tank.

The current '03 GA's have a 14.1 US gallon/53.4L gas tank.

My '02 GA has the 53 litre tank and I don't think I've ever put more than 48 litres in it.

I did a trip to Ottawa over the 2-4 and I got 535 out of 47 litres.

That's 8.78l/100K or just around 27mpg.
