I wish they'd just do it for this year model, they say production starts in september in elizabeth AU... If the concept gets around to wait then first year sales are going to suffer, and who pays for it? The people that waited!

More info followed by a new concept.

By RICHARD TRUETT | Automotive News

DETROIT -- The 2005 Pontiac GTO will be restyled to include hood scoops, General Motors sources said.

The 2004 model GTO, which does not have hood scoops, has prompted GTO fans to write letters to GM asking the automaker to bring back the scoops that were on the original 1964 GTO. The scoops enhanced the car's performance image.

Hood scoops can help cool the engine or force air into the motor. It is unclear if the scoops will be functional or decorative.

The new GTO is a rear-wheel-drive high-performance coupe with a 5.7-liter engine derived from the Chevrolet Corvette. Pontiac officials say the car's acceleration, handling and braking will be the best ever in a GTO.

Good numbers: Pontiac firming up specs for upcoming GTO

Pontiac is firming up the numbers on its 2004 GTO due here late this year, and they look good. Contrary to the 340 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque we were told it would have when we drove it in Australia (AW, Jan. 27), the numbers look more like 350 hp at 5200 rpm and 365 lb-ft at 4000 rpm from the LS1 V8 in the Holden Monaro-based GTO.

Pontiac officials say that should push the rear-drive GTO from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and through the quarter-mile in about 14 seconds.

Pontiac also estimates pricing at $33,000 (add $695 for the six-speed manual over the four-speed automatic) in a release announcing an advance ordering option for those fans who can’t wait. For more, see www.pontiac.com/gto

Also, a guy on another forum says that his dad has one ordered. Dealer's are already charging an estimated $7k markup in order for him to take delivery.

Since when is a manual transmission charged for as the option? Usually it is the auto.

Over $35k after all is said and done, even without a markup in MSRP, for a 14 second V8....no thanks.

I am beginning to think Bob Lutz is a bit of a fantasy dreamer. He has these aspirations of taking GM to this higher level, but in turn he wants all of his cars to be "limited edition" for lack of a better word. Not to mention high priced. What is needed are QUALITY, GOOD LOOKING cars, that are affordable and HAVE SOME BALLS. We don't need cars in the upper 20k + territory and are harder than balls to get because of their limited availability. It's simple what Pontiac is doing, replacing the Firebird with the GTO....which is pretty pathetic. They are increasing the price, decreasing the performance, and playing the angle of "the GTO returns" to fill that production spot. They'll end up with similar sales numbers as the Firebird probably, but with the GTO being limited quantities it won't look bad.

There may be a GMPD version arriving about that time(2005). It will be pushing 400+ HP, so it was said.

And then you'll be pushing over $40k.....might as well buy a C6 Vette then.

Here's an idea. Wait for the new GA GT with 240 hp(3.9 L) and a 6 speed manual. Now, plop an Eaton M90 on that 3.9L and you will have a sub 14 sec. for a little over $30K.

Lutz isn't a miracle worker. How many cars under 20k do you know of that are fast as hell, high quality, and good looking. The closest attempt at this is the SRT-4, which has the fast as hell part. The quality is yet to be seen, and the good looking part isn't quite there yet.

I went to Pontiacs web site when the GTO was announced. They had a comments section and I typed how the GTO should have a Ram Air hood. I'm glad others feel that way too.

It's very simple to make a quick car that is of decent quality and looks for under 20k...the question is, do they have the lack of greed to do it? That answer is No.

No offense but... BS... GM has been the leader in bang for the buck for a long time now, biggest bang for the buck car in the universe got the AX... the F-body with the V8. That's what GM fans have come to expect, not cars priced the same as Lexus with .75% of the resale value and 1/2 the quality. Bang for the buck is what GM has been about for the longest time.

No... the CAN do it, but they choose not to... So far.

SRT4 not good looking? Well... that's completley subjective. I wouldn't buy one but let's hope everyone follows suit and builds high performance for low $$.

I'm not saying GM doesn't have the bang for your buck, i was replying to AMRAAM's statement that Lutz is refusing to build fast, high quality, and affordable cars under 20 grand. All i am saying is that realisitcally, it is next to impossible unless you want the company to lose money.

RX8 thats another one that charges for a manual.

But I don't get where GM thinks this cars that great after all the F-body twins where not that bad but they just did not sell a lot in the final years and they had a sub $30,000 price so my question is where does GM think a $35,000 car well do better.

See 442, this is what I am getting at. I don't believe the sales would be better than the F-bod's if this was a normal production car. However, seeing the quantities are very small, they can sell it for the $35k and say it is a success because so many people want it. Realistically, on the accounting side, they are filling the sales numbers of the Firebird as well as making a bit more profit because of the increase in price. To me, very smart from a business standpoint...but from a car enthusiast standpoint...blahh

Think about this logically. How much does it cost to make an L36 engine or a 3400 V6? Not much. How much does it cost to make a J-body car? Next to nothing. Why would it cost sooooo much to dump a V6 into a entry level car?

No... I still say BS... they would still make great profits by selling low cost high performance cars, it doesn't cost them any more to make cars high performance.

Why not dump the 3400 into a base car as an option? Why not dump the 3800 SC into a mid level car like the GA? Why not dump a Northstar V8 into the Impala SS? 300HP Impala SS.. that sounds like a REAL Impala SS to me! Why not design a new 4 cyl turbo engine for a base car. Why not design a low cost new V6 and dump it in a base car?
