Thump thump thump from tire?

I've got a thump thump thump noise coming from the right-front side of my car at speeds below 40MPH. It seems like it may be 1 thump for each revolution of the tire. I can also feel vibration from it in my steering wheel. Also, when I turn to the right, the noise quiets down, but when I turn to the left, it goes from a thump to a high-pitched hum. Any ideas?

Hey Helmut, I have the same problem with mine. More of a swoosh than a thump though, but still the same. I have been trying to figure it out for months!!! Have you ever oiled under the car before? I was thinking that might be it. I had mine done over a year ago but I never had it re-done. if you ever find out what it is let me know. Thanks and good luck!!!

Mine's definitely not a swooshing sound, though. It almost sounds like I have a flat spot in my tire, but I don't think it's that since the noise doesn't change when the tires get hot.

ply seperation. take it to a tire shop and have them remove the tire and they will be able to find it out for you. don't wait because ply seperation is dangerous. it is caused by lots of things such as pot holes. its where air gets up into between the steel plies in the tread or even into the different layers of rubber in the sidewalls! could cause a blow out if kept being driven on.

I agree ... seperated tread.. or a bubble in the sidewall.... most likely on the inside of the tire... if it were on the outside you would deff know

Hey grandam1697, you say you hear a swooshing sound ,well I had the same noise and it turned out to be a defect in my GY Eagle RSA's. I have a 99 GA GT so I don't know if the defective tires were put on the newer GA's or not,but if you haven't found the reason for your noise I would get in touch with Goodyear and they would replace your tires as they did mine.I had to pay a part of the cost based on tread wear because my car's warranty had run out but you might get yours free if it is the problem. Just thought I would throw that your way in case it could help you out.

Never heard of ply separation, thats some great info.

About defective RSA's - theres a huge thread in the TSB section on that if you want more info.

Seperated ply eh. My car makes a squeling, swushing sound for a while. It also goes away when I turn one way. I rebuilt my brakes and nothing. I knew about the RS-A thing and figured it is probobly that. I have a new set of tires in the basement that I got a great deal on. I'll put them on someday.

BLACK99GT/ROB: Thanks for the tip. I will try that out. Did you call Goodyear or go through the dealer??? I thought it might be the tires a while ago so I had them rotated (back to front) but they still make the noise! So if it is the tires that make this noise I surely want to get that noise taken away!!!! Was yours the front right as well? That was thing that bothered me....maybe it's that side of the car??? Thanks.

I e-mailed Goodyear and the very next day they called me to set up an appointment with a Goodyear tire dealer in the area. They have to verify the noise is coming from the tires with a road test. The tire dealer I went to said he knew about the defective tires a long time ago but Goodyear did not come out with the info so it was up to the owners to say something about the noise. My noise was coming from both sides. One thing that I noticed is that the noise was not present when it was raining outside because of the moisture lubrication so that is something you might look for as well. BLACK99GT/ROB: Thanks for the advice. I have an appointment with a dealership near by work. They said they will look into the TSB and check out the car. I keep you guys updated. Thanks again.

I dont know of any TSB on the issue, I just e-mailed Goodyear and told them of the noise that was coming from my tires that a dealership said was coming from defective tires that was an issue with 99 and up GA's so I would suggest getting in touch with Goodyear directly on the issue because they know of the defect and they will set everything up to have your tires checked out.

i have this same problem. i was hoping it was ply seperation like you guys said, and i told the guy at discount tire that. they did an inspection, said my tires were fine. so they had me sit in my car... on the lift, with both front tires off of the car. i pressed the gas a little and sure enough, it still made the sound... its like a thumping grinding sound coming from somewhere in my drivetrain. when i drive on the road if sounds like im driving a trucc with some huge mudders on it. i have no idea what it could be, the guy at discount said it might be the tranny. he was going to checc the dipsticc, but i told him there wasnt one. anybody have ANY idea on this??? i dont want to get ripped off by goin 2 the dealership again...
