I've had a 160 amp for about a week now with a 4 gauge and it's going fine.

how would i higher output alternator burn up your electrical system??? your electrical system draws power from the alt....the alt doesnt just send all its power wherever it wants. If you heard any horror stories....its of blowing your alternator (which i have done). go with the high output alt...i wish i did.

I've had the 160amp for quite a while now along with 4 guage connecting it to the battery. I'd say... maybe a year and a half. And probably 20,000 miles. No problems at all

If you upgrade the alt definitely upgrade the wiring...no sense in keeping that flimsy stock wiring upgrade it all to at lease 4 or 2 gauge.

If you upgrade the alternator wire to a 4 or 2 (or better still, 0) gauge wire, don't forget to upgrade the engine and battery grounds (engine -> frame and battery [-] -> frame) too. The charge circuit needs to be strong on both positive and negative sides. If not, all you do is transfer the restriction to a different place.

Run larger wiring from the alternator (there is a screw post with a nut on the back of the alternator... but the coil packs) to the positive terminal on the battery. It's as simple as that. Leave your stock wire connected.

Where did you get the 180 amp alternator, and is 160 amps enough to run quite a few electronic devices along with a 2000 watt stereo?
