first things first... i absolutely hate this vehicle... and now their gonna introduce a lower budget, V-6 model... what's the world coming to...
![]() Porsche moves out of fast lane with Cayenne V-6 Reuters / August 27, 2003 FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- Germany's Porsche, famed for its growling sports cars, said Wednesday that it was set to launch a low-powered version of its Cayenne SUV -- one of the slowest models it has produced in decades. The world's most profitable carmaker said the new model, equipped with a V-6 engine from Volkswagen, would take 9.1 seconds to hit 68 mph, almost as long as it takes its fastest sports car to reach double that speed. "The first Porsche with a V-6 engine will be available in European markets from the end of November, and in the United States in the first half of 2004," the company said in a statement. The basic model would cost $44,580 before tax. Launched last year, the more powerful V-8 versions of the Cayenne were a radical departure for Porsche, which built its reputation on race-winning sports cars, not the two-ton offroaders that now dominate American highways. Praised by some as the ultimate symbol of indulgence and loathed by others as an ugly irrelevance, the Cayenne has kept Porsche sales on track as demand for its traditional 911 and Boxster sports cars slows. Sales of the 911 and Boxster slipped 9 percent in the nine months to the end of April, the first three quarters of Porsche's business year, although demand for the Cayenne meant the company sold 13 percent more cars overall. Some industry watchers say the arrival of a slower Cayenne, which has a top speed of 133 mph, suggest sales and pricing of the more powerful versions have nonetheless fallen short of expectations, and worry the car will damage Porsche's reputation as a maker of brawny racers. "The launch of the V-6 could stretch Porsche's brand credibility to the limit in our view," Goldman Sachs said in a research note this year, when rumors of a Cayenne V-6 model were first circulating. "It would be the slowest Porsche since the 924 of the 1970s, Price competition with VW and BMW will be intense and margins minimal," Goldman Sachs added. The 924, considered by Porsche purists to be one of the brand's least collectible models, used a four-cylinder engine designed by VW's Audi division, which also assembled the car. The two companies more recently collaborated on the development of the Cayenne and Volkswagen's Tourag off-roader. VW already offers the latter with a six-cylinder engine, while BMW offers its X5 SUV with six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. But other investors are more optimistic about the new model. Analysts at Lehman Brothers said they expected Porsche to sell 5,000 Cayenne V-6s in 2003/2004, or about 15 percent of total Cayenne sales, rising to over a quarter of sales the following year. "A limited supply of V-6s should enable Porsche to run its Leipzig plant at its full capacity of 40,000 units and improve overall profit contribution," Merrill Lynch said in a recent note.

What it's coming to is a smart decision by Porsche. They aren't going to sell too many $90,000 Cayenne's. They want in on the market and are trying to compete with the BMW, Benz SUVs. I'm sure it's V6 will be just as peppy as those.
The Boxster is no speed demon...and that's a modified 911.

smart to get into the market: yes... but i don't even think Porsche should be in that market... it's against their image IMO ...but i understand it from a business standpoint since SUV's are the craze in this country and turn a higher profit... just a little disheartening i guess...

porsche's image will not get hurt at all. they'll still sell their leading product, the 911. though the boxster is starting to take over for their leading product (since it's $50,000 cheaper)
they just realized people are buying more SUVs now and less sports/exotic cars. so why not jump in the market and make some money. i also think they are ugly... i see a few in town. but then i see the two porsche 911 GT2s running around in town and i fall in love all over again I've been a porsche fan since i got my first porsche micromachine (very small type of hotwheel or matchbox car). that is my dream car... i almost bought a porsche 944 turbo earlier this summer but that didnt sit well with parents so i didnt. sooner or later i'll have my porsche! -dc |

To me, the front looks ugly. The rest of the SUV looks good. I like the rear end. It certainly blew the doors off my car when the dealer raced me.

It's a freakin SUV, who gives a sh1t if it's not as fast as a sports car! Actually the V6 model would appear to be faster than alot of cars that are supposed to be "sporty".
What I think is really stupid is the very fact that Porsche is making an SUV in the first place. |

Why not? They make sports cars, why not try something different and make a sports suv? Makes sense. I'm sure I would enjoy driving one... if I had the money of course. Alot of the reviews i've seen give it high marks.

By the way, the Cayenne Turbo will get a power kit later this year (as an option) that will boost it to, or above, the 500HP mark. This truck will be pushing serious power.

As far as the SUVs front..they had to try and keep the infamous Porsche headlights/front end.
I have a firm belief that in 5 years, cars will be the extreme minority and SUVs will take their place in prominance

But the thing about suvs, thier like minivans. Station wagons are smaller and sit lower. Most suvs offer third row seating plus other nice features that station wagons don't. I don't think it's a fad at all.

I chose to purchase a minivan over an SUV (my wife made me). Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more room in a minivan than ANY suv I can think of. How many SUV's can you fit a tall couch in? Big screen? How about all that and still have passanger room? SUV's are OK and alot of them look better than vans and are more trendy (like I care about trendy), but most of them are not for me.

Not too many minivans have the features or power that suvs pack. My aunt has a Oldsmobile Silouette GLS. My step mom has a '03 Lincoln Navigator. Interior wise, they have about the same amount of room. The Navigator is nice because it has power folding rear seats. The Silouette is nice because it has power sliding doors. But the Navigator has Navigation. The only minivan I can think of that has navigation is the Honda Oddessy. That's some of the main reasons why I prefer suvs as do many others. Besides, i'm 20 and a minivan is not for me.

minivans aren't for me either... we had one... more room yes...but a pain in the ass to make the room removing the seats... i know alot of them have the easier fold flat seats now, but not all do and you have to remove the seats... my TrailBlazer is the right size for what i need... i helped my friend Justin move down to college and while we were down there he wanted to buy a few things... there were 3 of us in the truck and we were able to fit his 27" TV (in box) and large futon (in box) in the back of the SUV with one seat down and still had room for some other items... i'm glad that i got my SUV... it's nice and does what i need it to do... and looks much more stylish than a minivan ...
..ok...that felt like a damn commercial ![]()
