What do u think of these Plexi grills?

I designed some Plexi grills for 12" subs... I tried to make them w/ hand tools, but they didn't turn out that great. So I looked into getting them laser cut. The problem is that most of the cost comes from programming the machine. If I only get 2 grills, they'd be about $100 each! But if I buy 20, they'd only be about $18 each. So I was thinking about buying 20, using what I need, and selling the rest on ebay. But I don't know if people would like the design... what do u guys think? U think $30 would be a reasonable price?

Here's a pic of one of the hand-cut prototypes on my box...

woah I can see why it costs so much, plexi isnt the most friendly material to work with. Its not really my style though kinda reminds me of a floor drain grate.

Not really a fan of the design.

Speaking of "holy plexiglass batman"....

Was it supposed to be the pontiac Arrow Head? Cause that goes down like a V and has the little \/ thngys at the top. And it looks like it would block alot of the bass.

i was just gonna say what matt said, your bass output will be hampered.. when i WAS going to make a grill, i was just gonna make an X, try and use as little surface area as possible so your airflow isnt restricted

It shouldn't make a noticable difference in output.

Spiff it up a little. Good design, but these days something that simple won't get the looks. Good start, though!

It doesn't make a noticable difference in output (look at the pix -- I already have the prototypes on the box). Bass waves are very long, so they're not disturbed by small obstacles. Think of a wave hitting a beach -- a big boulder may redirect the wave, but a few pebbles won't.

Anyway, it sounds like there's a total lack of interest in this design (I've have similar results on other forums I belong to). I could change it or dress it up, but then the price goes up as it gets more complicated. Besides, there's no guarantee anybody would like the next design I come up w/ either. So I guess it ain't gonna happen

Come on man.....just because one design sucked doesn't mean you can't re-design them. I'd be interested in them, if the design was appealing.

It looks like you know what you're doing, keep it up! Something like this would be cool.

But I don't think the design sucked -- I think it's pretty cool, which is why I designed it that way. But the problem is that people have different ideas about what's appealing and what's not. I think it would be pretty tough to come up w/ a design that would appeal to enough people to be worthwhile. If u want to sketch something or even just modify my design, go right ahead. If I like it and there's strong enough interest, I'll get it programmed into a CAD file and get it made.

Lol... I don't even have a Grand Am... I joined this site cuz my g/f just got a '96 GASE and she wanted a system, and I figured this would be the easiest way to figure out where to run the power wire. I have a '99 Grand Prix SE. I've heard the Pontiac Arrowhead idea a few times, but I figured that would limit the appeal too much (especially if I try to sell them on ebay). But what if we flipped the design upside down, and made the triangle into the bottom part of the Pontiac arrowhead? Would u guys be interested in that? I could probably get some people from the Grand Prix and maybe even Bonneville forums as well (my bro has a '97 Bonneville)

The logo itself would have to be solid, with holes cut out to form the "cross" at the top of the logo -- otherwise, if the logo was cut out, the cross would have to be solid, and it would be too weak. So I'd have to leave the rest of the space open for bass to get out. That would leave too much of the sub exposed -- there's has to be some slats to allow the air to flow while still protecting the subs.

I think I saw some red spacers keeping it away from the sub.

Yep, u discovered my secret identity, even though I tried so hard to conceal it

Yep, I cut some 1/2" wood dowel rod into 1.5" lengths, drilled a hole in the middle for the mounting screws, and painted them red to better match my install's color theme.

Anyway, I was talking to a guy on ClubGP... he's an engineering student and he knows a guy in the business. He may be able to run a batch with several different designs at slightly cheaper prices than I found. So we may end up w/ a selection of designs to choose from... I'll let u know!

RE
JL
(jl10W7)(W7)
Pontiac logo
Syco's design(triangle)?
Alpine ////A
MTX

Well some of the preliminary designs are done... but they're not set in stone, so feel free to make suggestions. Here's the link: http://photos.yahoo.com/rlgkls
