Lightbulb Delphi OEM Navigation installed in GA

As some of you already know, I purchased the OEM Navigation system. I got it from Chase and he got it from an wrecked '04 Rendevous. If you haven't seen his thread, click here: http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/showt...threadid=23704

I paid $500 for it. The unit has some nice features and the Navigation a number of features. The audio is much better than the stock unit that came with my car. The stereo is better, the highs are better, and the bass is louder. I have a basslink and it makes it pound.

Some things though. The unit is always in "Night mode." That is, the backlights are always on when the unit powers up. Another thing is that the unit does not stay on when the key is turned to off and removed. Don't know what that's about.

Right now, the unit is in the freezer. That's the trick Chase told me would unlock the unit. It keeps showing "theftlock activated" and in order for me to unlock it, I have to stick it into a freezer for 3hrs. I am able to use the unit after I plug it in and turn the key to ACC. It comes up with "Delphi." The second I turn the key to ON, I get theftlock. It is locked permanantly until I unplug it and plug it back in. Also, I have to see if I can change the green lighting it has. Here are pics:

I have to buy a module in order to play dvds through the unit. And no, I don't have to pay service fees. It's free.

Appearantly, this thing uses leds for the backlighting. It's probably surface mount but I could be wrong. I have the faceplate taken off. I just need to remove the nut scews holding the circuit board in to have a peek.

I think the "Theftlock Activated" message is just the nicer version of the usual LOC display. Here's what I got on the Rendez-Vous radio:

Radio Setup

Important
The Radio Setup option does not contain a submenu. Radio Setup will configure the following systems:

Steering wheel controls
Learn VIN
DTCs
Class 2 radio messages

The radio setup procedure will also clear the following messages:

CAL
CAL ERROR
CALIBRATE
To properly setup the DE 100 series radio, complete the following procedure using a scan tool.

At the Main Menu screen, select DIAGNOSTICS.
At the Vehicle Identification screen, select the following options:
2001 Model Year
B Platform
At the System Selection Menu screen, select BODY.
At the Body screen, select RADIO.
At the Radio screen, select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS.
At the Special Functions screen, select RADIO SETUP.
At the Radio Setup screen, select ENTER.
After the scan tool displays TEST COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY, press EXIT.
Cycle the ignition.
Without learning the VIN, the radio will display a locked message (LOC).

Well when chase had it, he went to the dealer and had a service tech hook up a scan tool. He said it didn't work right. Let me see if I can find what he said.

I just looked on ebay for the tech 2 tool and they actually have some there. But they are selling it for $1000 and $2000.

If I could get it, that would eliminate the need to go to the dealer. But I didn't think it was worth that much.

You really have to hit the dealership to unlock the new radios. The VIN is stored in EEPROM -- you aren't going to erase that in the freezer (they are tested to -40deg).

It's a simple thing to update with a Tech2 (good luck finding a Tech2 -- they are $4000 brand new).

Just take it to the dealership...they'll be able to reset the vin for you. It's a block config...should take all of 30 seconds.

Damn, gm makes things so freaking complicated. Chrysler offers the oem navigation to customers with harness and antenna. And people have installed it. It works fine. GM is another story. It's a shame.

If it keeps kids from breaking into my car to steal the OEM radio I'm all for it... Especially if I paid 500$ for a USED OEM radio...

I went to a dealer and was told that it would cost $100 to do this. If it doesn't work, then I don't have to pay. Why so much???
