Trunk Water Leak

Okay guys I need some help

I've been experiencing major condensation in my trunk where the spare tire is. I've ripped up half the carpet and it seems that the water is coming from the passenger side, somewhere near the vent by the bumper.

I've picked out a few rocks under the carpet. So, I don't know if it's possibly coming in through that vent?

Anyone else experience this, if so what did you do to correct it?

Also, does anyone know how much a new trunk carpet is?

you can always do what Matt did to his 94 GT... drill a hole for the water to escape.

but that wouldnt solve the problem. check the passenger side tail light. my tail lights used to leak in my 95 but i changed to GT tails and solved that problem.

as for carpet... best bet would be a junk yard. (no clue about price) 9 times out 10, carpet is usually untouched and the trunk carpet is rarely damaged. good luck!

Cavingman had this problem and said it was the vent. He has all the details so he should be here shortly. If not, hit him up with a PM.

yea mine was from the vent. I took a hamer to it and knocked the whole thing out, then fiberglassed over the hole. no more water.
you may not wanna go that far, so i dunno. epoxy plastic over it or something?

Plastic thing, I assume it's the vent everyone talks about? If so, would it hurt anything to cover it up? Isn't it for cabin pressure, or perhaps vetilation so that if moisture does get in there it can help it out or something?

Also, I've noticed if you look un to where the fender curves it is wet, I'm not sure if it's because of evaporation, or water actually leaks where tha hard black plastic thing is above the tail light.

Next, I'll read the other thread, but am asking this even though it may have been covered. If the tail lamp is leaking, how/where would it be getting in at, and how would I go about sealing it off? I'm ripping out the carpet tonight and will take a closer look at it this weekend. Since I've found rocks in there I suspect it's the vent.

I had the exact same problem with my car. The spare tire well would be wet and about a half inch of water standing in it. I'd dry it all out, and a few weeks later it would be back. Turns out it was a body seam (somewhere near the tailight) that had not been sealed at the factory during the manufacture. They fixed that under warranty, and I also talked them into a new jack, jack handle, trunk carpeting and insulation, and a new carboard/carpet spare tire cover.

my dealership seemed to think that it was the circular seams that are at the bottom of the spare tire well, there are 2 of them I think. However, they took it upon themselves to silicone seal them, order me a new trunk carpet, as well as a spare tire well cover. They also said that the majority of the leaks come from the weather stripping around the trunk itself, however I would like to add that NOTHING else was wet besides the 5 inches of water at the very bottom of the tire well, immersing my jack and tools.

that was warranty invoice # 32

Drill a 3/8" hole in the pan for a drain, and duct tape the vent. If water stops comming in, then you may wish to replace the tape with someting else. At least if if you find the vent isn't the problem, you don't have to chip off messy fiberglass and still look somewhere else for the problem!!!
