1-2 shift problem

i am having a similar shift problem as others on this site with my 2000 grand am gt. what is happening is that it will shift out of first and will hesitate for a second. then i will feel a nudge or shift and it goes into second gear. by the way, this is at full throttle. i have read on here this could be the pressure solenoid. where is this located and how much does this thing cost?? any suggestions would be great. thanks

Its located in the Transaxle. Its a cheap fix, I wouldent jump right to that being the problem, check your TPS aswell.

how would i go about knowing if it is the tps or pressure solenoid, etc?? there is probally no way to clean the tps.

sorry, i dont know much about the grand am's. i usually don't work on this car, but my camaro instead. by the way, my camaro is a 6-speed, so i know little about automatics.

I've been having the same problem lately as well...is this a common problem in 2000s?

i bet, my 2000 had this problem as well. did u actually feel a vibration in the pedal as well from 1-2 full throttle. my tranny was misfiring, shuttering, and slipping all in one and it ended up being a solenoid problem.

i bet its that.

Uhh, tranny's don't misfire, maybe mis-shift... but no misfire, combustion in a tranny is BAD!

...Oh, and would you have happened to disconnect the battery or clear the PCM because whenever I do that, my car granny shifts for about 200 miles after until it relearns the tranny

Dealer qouted me $800 with a 2 day down time, all that to pull the trans a replace something that looks like a ball bearing, I said no.
Once I got the line pressuer upped, it's not really a problem anymore.

Careful with cranking up the line pressure. Over time it blows out seals and can do all kindsa not-cheap-to-fix stuff. It works well as a temporary band-aid when dealing with problems like the clutches slipping (this is the most common thing that happens when people "blow" their trans), but the problem will still get worse.

A little extra line pressure isent going to damage anything. Remeber Sloppy shifts can do just as much damage.

not sure if this is the same... but my tranny was having issues between 1 and 2... i had never flushed the tranny in 70k miles so i did that and the problem went away... so maybe that could be it... it's over 100k miles now and occasionally i'll get a slight hesitation between the two gears so i might have to flush the tranny again... i'm definitely not as mechanical as some of these guys, but i just wanted to throw up a different thing to possibly try that should be much cheaper...

I had the same prob a couple months ago... ended up being my TPS. Fixed that, but its coming back again. I've been too lazy to take it to the dealer to get the warranty put to use...

The easiest way is to check it. New tranny fluid (Dexron III ATF) should have a healthy pinkish color, slightly darker than kool-aid. If its burnt (as is the case when your tranny has high mileage, or if your motor just smoked the clutches) it will have a slight smell to it and also be very dark. AFAIK, changing it should have no detrimental effects.

my 1-2 shift has been weird since I got it, 32k, it did the same thing, slight hesitation when 50-75% throttle all the way to before the DHP. I added the DHP at 60k and don't have a problem anymore, every once in a while the hesitation comes back but that's only when the trans temp is up to 180* The fluid needs to be changed, original fluid in it. I will ask Santa for that, since I am a poor white boy college student.
