2004 AUTO SHOW: Debuting in Detroit
Corvette, wagons, pickups are among exhibit highlights December 4, 2003 BY MARK PHELAN FREE PRESS AUTO CRITIC From the all-new 2005 Chevrolet Corvette to Honda's first pickup truck and an eagerly awaited updating of Chrysler's vital minivans, more than 60 new cars, trucks and concept vehicles will debut at the North American International Auto Show next month in Detroit. Automakers will showcase the latest trends in everything from seating to all-wheel-drive and hybrid gasoline-electric cars. For the first time, the show will also have an area dedicated to tuner cars, the souped-up hatchbacks and sedans that have wowed a new generation of car lovers. Automakers from around the world will bring new cars, trucks and concept vehicles to the show, but Detroit-based brands will make the biggest splash. Ford Ford Motor Co. will unveil its long-awaited Five Hundred full-size sedan and Freestyle crossover wagon. Both cars will be available with front- or all-wheel drive and with a six-speed automatic transmission or a smooth and fuel-efficient, continuously variable transmission. The Five Hundred and Freestyle go on sale in the third quarter as 2005 models. Ford will also show the all-new 2005 Mustang coupe and convertible. The Mustang's looks borrow heavily from the car's classic 1960s and '70s styling, while modern engines, transmissions and mechanical and electronic systems bring the pony car galloping into the 21st Century. Other new Fords at the auto show will include: A midlife upgrade of the Focus, with a new interior. A midlife upgrade of the Escape compact SUV. The Escape gasoline-electric hybrid. A special edition of the F-150 pickup. Ford's Lincoln and Mercury brands will have four new vehicles at the show: The Mercury Mariner compact SUV. A Lincoln concept crossover wagon. A Lincoln concept luxury two-seat roadster. A luxury truck. Chevrolet Chevrolet will showcase the 2005 Corvette, the sixth entirely new model in the sports car's 50-year history. Early photos suggest the new 'Vette's styling will be consistent with the current car, but insiders promise more power, performance and comfort. Fixed headlights will replace the pop-up lamps that have been a Corvette mainstay since 1962. Chevrolet will also show: The Malibu Maxx, an intriguing long-wheelbase version of the new Malibu midsize sedan with an extremely roomy back seat and a rear hatch. The Cobalt compact coupe and sedan, which replace the aging and uncompetitive Cavalier. GM executives say the new cars are better equipped and more stylish because the Korean-built Aveo will now anchor the bottom of Chevrolet's lineup. The hybrid gasoline-electric version of the Silverado full-size pickup. Chevy says the hybrid system reduces fuel consumption by as much as 15 percent. Buick and Saturn General Motors' Saturn and Buick brands will introduce their first minivans, the Saturn Relay and Buick Terrazza. Both vehicles use the basic underpinnings of GM's current minivans, but their exteriors move them in the direction of car-based SUVs like the Honda Pilot. GM calls them crossover sport vans. Pontiac Pontiac will unveil the midsize G6, which replaces the Grand Am for the 2005 model year. The G6 shares its basic engineering with the Saab 9-3 and Chevy Malibu, and Pontiac promises a range of models including a high-performance all-wheel-drive version and a hardtop convertible. The sedan and coupe models should debut at the Detroit show. Hummer Hummer will reveal the H2 SUT, a version of the popular H2 with a small pickup bed replacing the SUV's rear cargo compartment. Chrysler Chrysler will introduce its reworked Town and Country minivan, the vehicle that in many ways defines the brand. The minivans do not get an all-new platform, but Chrysler has reportedly reworked them nearly from the ground up. Company insiders promise a host of new comfort and convenience features, including an industry-first interior in which both the second and third rows of seats fold flat into the floor. The production version of Chrysler's new rear- and all-wheel-drive 300C full-size sedan will also debut at the show, as will the convertible PT Cruiser, convertible Crossfire coupe and a supercharged performance version of the Crossfire. Dodge The 500-horsepower Dodge Ram SRT-10 will dominate Dodge's performance-oriented display. The V10-powered full-size pickup boasts a top speed of 150 miles an hour and a base price of $45,000, excluding destination charges. Dodge wants to use the show to burnish its performance credentials, so it will also unveil the production version of its 300-plus-horsepower, Hemi-powered Magnum sport wagon. The Magnum and Chrysler 300C will be available with the Hemi V8, a 255-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and a 200-horsepower 2.7-liter V6. The revamped version of the Dodge Caravan minivan will also debut. It reportedly shares the Town and Country's interior innovations. Dodge will also show its Slingshot concept car, a rakish-looking little 90-horsepower sport coupe that could be Dodge's low-cost bookend to the pricey Viper. Jeep Jeep will show a stretched version of its Wrangler small SUV. The long-wheelbase Wrangler Unlimited is 15 inches longer than the current Wrangler, providing more rear seat and cargo room. Jeep will also show its Rescue concept SUV. The Rescue is a big and rugged off-roader that hints at Jeep's answer to GM's hefty and highly profitable Hummer. Honda Honda will show its first pickup, a concept vehicle that is similar to a new model expected to go into production at its Alabama assembly plant in 2004. Not many details are available, but expect it to be a four-door model with a flexible back seat that stows away to create an open passage from the pickup bed to the passenger compartment. While that layout is similar to the Chevy Avalanche, Honda's truck will be smaller than the full-size Chevrolet and will share its structure with the more car-like and less rugged Honda Pilot SUV. Nissan Nissan will show all-new versions of its Frontier compact pickup and Pathfinder midsize SUV. A concept of a Nissan crossover vehicle smaller than the company's hot-selling Murano crossover will also make its worldwide debut. Nissan's Infiniti luxury brand will also reveal its QX56 full-size SUV. The QX56 will come from the Canton, Miss., plant that builds the Nissan Titan pickup, Pathfinder Armada full-size SUV and Quest minivan. Toyota Toyota will have the Tundra Double Cab, a larger version of its Tundra pickup with four conventional front-hinged doors. Toyota will count on the roomy Double Cab to support Tundra sales until the automaker's first true full-size pickup goes into production in a new plant in San Antonio in 2006. Toyota is also likely to use the show to launch its latest hybrid-electric cars, including the Lexus RX330 hybrid and concept vehicles that will reinforce its leading position in that evolving technology. New from Europe DaimlerChrysler's Smart brand will make its U.S. debut, with a new version of its little European city car that was developed specifically for American buyers. The main Smart car sold here will probably be a four-door model, but don't be surprised if Smart also shows its itsy-bitsy roadster model. Nearly two feet shorter than a Mazda Miata, the hot-looking Smart roadster is small enough that you could parallel park it in the space occupied by two office cubicles. Other new models likely from European brands include: The Volvo S40 compact sedan and V40 compact station wagon, which borrow the styling of the company's larger models to create an extremely appealing entry-level model. The Aston Martin Volante, the convertible version of the new DB9 sports car. The DB9 coupe will also make its U.S. premiere at the show. The $350,000 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, a 626-horsepower two-seater that's the closest anyone has come to building a street-legal Formula 1 race car. A concept car close to the production version of the Mercedes GST sport tourer Mercedes will build alongside the M-class in Alabama late in 2004. The Saab 9-2X, a sporty all-wheel-drive compact priced below the $26,090 midsize Saab 9-3. BMW's graceful new 645i luxury coupe, which goes on sale in the first quarter of 2004. The convertible version of the new 6-series could make its worldwide debut at the auto show. The BMW X3 compact luxury SUV, which boasts a six-speed manual transmission and BMW's sophisticated all-wheel-drive system. Prices start around $31,600. |

Why does Detroit have to be sooo far. Why can't they move it to D.C.? I mean, we got a brand new, huge convention center that opened up in April 2003. Move it here!!! Damnit!

"Pontiac promises a range of models including a high-performance all-wheel-drive version and a hardtop convertible."
I'll take an AWD hardtop convertible G6 coupe- sounds like it should be awesome. Hopefully they follow through with the production of it and get it to us! |

nice find Vintalage. I'm gunna have to wait till the NYIAS...sigh
hey guys how much do you think a fully decked out G6 will be? Like a GA fully loaded (with SC/T and everything) is 26 something IIRC. I don't think it can be THAT expensive.....i say high 20's...monte carlo esque pricing.

Hmmmmmmmm
The thing that caught my attention the most is the high performance AWD G6.
If its true, you know I'm in line. Plus I hear its suppost to have a killer Monsoon audio system with a factory subwoofer. Those 2 things put together would make me very happy indeed |

Not me. I'm done. GM made a mistake with it's current GA. Quality issues. In fact, they never resolved that problem from the beginning. Plus aftermarket isn't good. So pontiac lost a future customer. I'm moving on.

How can I? My car is full of problems. Common problems that should have been taken care of in the first year. I expect this from the first year the car is out (1999), not a 2002. My car is a 2002 and it is in the shop every freakin month. I'm done. GM screwed up. It's simply rediculous. And I should give 'em a break? I would be stupid to buy another GM car. I gave them a break with purchasing the grand am I have now. I had a '99 Alero and that was full of problems. When I purchased the grand am, I was not expecting as many problems the alero had but it seems to be just as bad, maybe worse.
Forget that. To the imports I go. Where the quality is at. ![]() |

I have many friends with import cars that have worse problems thatn I ever had with my Grand Am. Yes... I did have problems with the Grand Am but nothing too major. Alternator and a water leak. And yes I was fumming since I paid alot of $$ for the car and it was new...
Either way, just because the car has an import name on it does not mean it is quality. I'll buy another GM car. I'd even buy another Grand Am.... if it were not for the fact that Grand Prix GTP's and Buick Regal GS's exsist. ![]() |
