Tire size/brand suggestions

I'm hoping to purchase some 17 inch rims during the winter and i'm wondering what size of tire to get. I'm debating between a 215/45 17 or a 225/45 17. I'm wondering which size would be best.

In addition, i know everyone reccomends kumho tires but i was wondering how good wanli tires are. I've heard nothing but good things from phatridegt.

Any help that anyone could give me or any direction that someone could point me in would be great help to me.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Derek

I have no clue about what tire size you will need but i can give you my two cents on tires.

I have had a few different sets.

RSA's...we all know SUCK
sumitomo HTR's are really nice ALL season tires.
yokohama AVS db were really nice ALL season tires.
yokohama Parada Spec-2 KICK ASS SUMMER TIRE. They grip REALLY nice.

Those are all the tires i have had on my car so far. the RSA's and the sumitomo's are for the stock wheels. and the other two i had on my sets of 18's.

You know... say what you want about the Goodyear RSA's, but as of right now, I have just over 58,000 miles & 3 1/2 years on my stock RSA's, and I am finally in need of new tires. They have been very good for me in wet & dry weather. Its only now that they are going bald are they not great on snow and ice, but then that would be true with ANY tire.

I had a good bit of miles on my RSA's as well but you have to look at your age and the age of the person asking about tires. you are 30 he is 17. 2 completely different driving habits. you also have to take that into consideration.

just scrolw down to the --/--/17 sizes and those are the dimentions you can use on your car w/ no problem.

Go 225/45/17

oh, and RSA = tehs uck

Comepared to my old Michilin Pilot sport's there is no comparison for dry handeling....and compared to my Yokohama K2's for snow there is no comparison either

I guess to me Tires need to serve a purpose (i.e. dry traction, snow traction) not just be a pad between your rim and the road. Heck, I have 3 sets of tires right now for my GA depending on the road conditions

Which basically means I have about 13 years of driving experience over him, and 8 more years than you. The "completely different driving habits" you bring up means only that I can kick both of your asses on the street to power of 21.

I've heard so many great things about Sumitomo HTR+ and other brands such as yokohama but I haven't heard much about the Continnental Contiextreme Contacts. I have these tires and they are great tires. they have both performance and "all season" capability. Am I the only one to have these tires? You may want to look into this tire, for it will give you the all around perfomance for the practical day to day driving needs.

When I get new tires this spring (stupid f*cking RSAs), I will be getting either Bridgestone Potenza RE950s for my stock Chrometechs, or if I get new rims, Bridgestone RE750s.

I had the RE950s on my Cutlass before I traded it in, and those tires are awesome, espically in rain. I cant wait to see what the RE750s are like.

I have been looking at tires for when I replace my RSA's and I think I have decided on the Conti's that you are on. How many miles have you had them and are they as good on snow as they say they are? The one issue about them I am unsure on is some of the reviews say the sidewalls are a little soft. How have they been for you? Are you an aggressive driver?

I've got the Contiextreme contacts in 18 inch size. I know that the tires are better than my stock RSA's. I can't compare the tires I have to any other brands out there because this has been my first set of 18's. I would assume the extreme contacts in a 16 might be a little soft because the side wall is larger than an 18. I have about 8,000 miles on mine and I do like them. For the most part I do a lot of highway driving and at times I'll hammer into a sharp turn when coming off the 495 Beltway and the tires hold up real good. I can get them to squeel and thats when I know to lay off!!

Myself I am a HUGE fan of the Yokahame Parada Spec II. Had them on my Honda and GAGT and I love them. Good in both Wet and Dry conditions. Ice is a whole different story. Won't go there. I also Like the Sumi's that I just put on my little bro's mustang. good traction decent tread design.

When I bought my rims, they mounted Wanli's on them in error. They had pretty aggressive tread patterns, but looked poor for any type of wet/all weather conditions... so back they went. (plus I already paid extra for the Kumho's) Wanli's seem to be a cheap 17+ tire that alot of aftermarket places sell with rims.

I have a set of Potenza RE950's on the way for the 94. Track tests and customer reviews seem to be very good. We'll see later this week.

I got 215/45/17 Kumho 711's on my 17's. Haven't driven on them much yet, the 95 is parked during bad weather.

These are the tires that I am currently looking at to put on my car in a few months ( or when the weather gets better anyway)
Kuhmo ECSTA MX , Kuhmo ECSTA Supra 712,Sumitomo HTR-Z, Yoko AVS ES100 or yoko AVS dB S2. all are $100 or less at tirerack.com
Hankook Ventus K102 @ discounttiresdirect.com were 74.00 w/ free shipping

i have nitto 550's on my 17's right now and i love them, i also had the parada spec 2's on my last car and i got incredible grip with those, however the parada's did wear out faster than any other type of tire i have had. anyways good luck with your tire search, all i can say is that in my experience, the nitto 550's are the best i have come across yet
