Volkswagen Phaeton News: Reported to be discontinued in a few years

"DETROIT (Reuters) - Volkswagen, the company long synonymous with the inexpensive Beetle, on Wednesday put a $94,600 price tag on ultra-luxury versions of its Phaeton sedan in the United States -- making it the highest-priced VW ever.
Europe's largest carmaker began selling a 335-horsepower V8 version of the Phaeton last November at a price of $64,600.

The 420-horsepower, 12-cylinder model, which VW touts as "the ultimate flagship of the Volkswagen brand," has only recently become available to U.S. car buyers.

At a base price of nearly $95,000, the Phaeton W12 is the most expensive VW ever, Volkswagen's U.S. subsidiary acknowledged in a press release.

Even so, it added, the model was also "the most affordable 12-cylinder vehicle on sale in the U.S. market." Its closest competitors include the BMW 760Li, which starts at about $116,000, and the Mercedes S600, priced from $122,000.

The 2004 New Beetle from VW -- while not exactly the "people's car" the company took its name from -- has a 115-horsepower engine and a base price with a five-speed manual transmission of $16,330 in the U.S. market."

Check this video out of the phaeton w12.

I am downloading it right now, I am sure the vehicle itself is impressive.

Actually, I am impressed with alot of VW's. The Golf GTI VR6, 1.8T, Jetta VR6 etc...

But the prices are insane!! Crap... for the price of a loaded Jetta I could get a prettly well but not fully loaded Maxima.

Either way thanks for posting this. As usual, good find. I don't agree with you on alot of things but you find the most interesting stuff to post in here.

$95,000 for a Volkswagon? That is almost
as bad as folks paying $130K for a Ford.

The VW Jetta GL VR6 for $23K is not too bad.
I almost put in on the wife's wish list this year,
but it does not come with an automatic option.
(Some of us prefer not to jack with any gears.)

Wow, just wow! How did they get that thing to do 201 mph?? I can't believe that thing has to meet all those requirements. I wonder what the other 11 rediculous ones were? Amazing.

it's on par with the new Audi A8L...that car is amazing, and it's freakin huge!! the backseats are so so comfortable, the recline...the rear controls are easy to read, comfortably placed...the car itself is just WOW!!

and it's offered in a W8 as well...they had a W12 on display (couldnt touch it) at NAIAS, and then they had a fully loaded Pheaton W8...that you could sit in...it costs around $65-$70k...IMO if i had the money, i would NOT overlook this car..kudos to VW for making such a high class car

The problem comes in that people that do have the money for the car will not wantt to buy "the people's car" when they can buy Benz/BMW/Porsche/Land Rover/Jaguar/Audi. It's also about image, and luxury image VW does not have.

Cool Haha

Cheapiest V-12 powered car, but not for long once Caddy starts to drop those nice 500hp V-12's in a couple of choice vehicles.

I'm not a big fan of VW anyway (never heard of a 23grand Jetta VR6, more like 26g with discounts *thats what they wanted me to pay*), I'd much rather pay for BMW or heck I could grab a 911 Turbo and pretend those tiny back seats are useable. You do realize with that money you could pick up both a M5 and a CTS-V both of which make 400+hp with 4 less cylinders and less weight to haul around to boot. Its actually sad that a V-12 only makes 420, especially when GM is fooling with a 600hp "Blue Devil" V-8 and a lesser LS7 which makes "only" 475-500hp. Not to mention Caddy's upcoming V-12 will trounce that VW V-12.

As you can tell I'm more about performance than oggles of creature comfort. The M5 or CTS-V is plenty nicely loaded with crap for me, plus they are fast as **** with *grins*tons of modding capabilities.

I'll pass.

It's painfully obvious. But this isn't a performance or sport luxury car. This is a luxury car. Pure luxury. But it can also perform. Now if this were a Audi, I bet you would say "nice." If you haven't noticed, the A8 closely resembles the Phaeton.

With that said, i'm not sure what VW is trying to do with their brand given this car's staggering price tag. We will just have to see how this plays out for them. But seeing this car in person at the autoshow, all I can say is wow!!! It is very nice.

I don't care who the **** makes it... this Phanton ROCKS. 420HP? How could I pass? Well... I have to considering I don't have the coin to pay $95,000 for a car.

I do like performance more than creature comfort, but I do like BOTH. This thing has both, and done VERY well. The rest of the car makers should be taking some extensive notes.

^^i have to agree, this car is not performance oriented....it's pure luxury, it's definetly a car you would have to see and experience in person to really be blown away

i think i sat in the reclined backseats for about ten minutes at the autoshow...

Nice car, good job VW. It's interesting that they went into the luxury market, but I know BMW and Mercedes are a little worried. This is good competition and will make the others build even better cars. I Like.
