Power Steering (Official Thread)

Alright guys I have noticed like a whining or rubbing noise whenever I turn my wheel a good amount. Like probably a lil bit more than a 1/4 turn. Its not too loud but I'm concerned that something is wrong? What do I need to check out to make sure everything is ok? Thanks

Brian

About the same sound my power steering pump made before it went out, BOTH times. Started making the sound, then the steering got progressively harder to turn at stop and low speed as time went on, theb became no power assist at all. Might wanna have a friend take a look and give their opinion.

Mine used to only make the noise at low speed and stop. It would also get worse when you started to turn the wheel. Like I said, after a while I noticed it took more and more effort, until I had the pump replaced.

I had the exact same symptoms before my pump broke (twice as well) and now it's starting up again. I'm just scared cause now I'm out of warranty! What does a job like this cost? $300 or so?

Do I need a new power steering pump?

I've noticed that more and more a "hissing" sound coming from my engine bay. I finally opened her up and noticed that the noise was coming from my powersterring pump. It sounds like the bearings are going out? I'm not sure... when i turn the steering wheel the sound goes away for a second or two, then reappears. Is this the sound of my pump's death? or should i just ignore it?

thanks!

I totally agree with the fluid top-off, as per the manual. The pump is hissy noisy in its own right. If you are steering ok and have proper steering assistance, with slight hesitation at the end-of-travel, you are probably ok.

You didn't mention the car year or if your car is in warranty. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have the dealer or a reputable shop check it. A skilled mechanic can recognize the pump's sound and tell very quickly if there is a problem.

But, in summary, this particular pump is noisy with a bearing sound as its nature. What you are hearing is hydraulics going through an orifice at extreme pressure. Honestly sounds like a bearing.

it is a 1999GT with no warranty left, otherwise they woulda heard from me I know what "hissing" sound you guys are refering to as I hear that on cars all the time. But this sound is more of a sound like there's something dry inside the pump, and it's just loud as hell... When I'm sitting still, idling, with the car running, it overpowers the noise of the engine, and you can hear it. it sounds pretty bad, and I'm just wondering i guess if i should replace it? Is there a way to test it? I'll check fluids, but the last time i checkd it was full...

thanks all

Good luck. I would go by AutoZone and let them listen first. Let us know what happened.

that is exactly the problem im having. i have yet to get it fixed cuz i havent had the time and dont have another car to use yet. but yes i believe it is the power steering pump. check the fluid first, then if the fluid is fine ur pump is probably goin like mine.

damn.. i'm bout 1500 miles from being out of my 36,000 warranty. hehehe

Dealer fix list before 36,000:
1.) power steering
2.) inaccurate gas gauge ( I can reset the trip meter, fill up and drive 200 miles before the gas needle leaves 'F' mark)

Something else has developed in my steering...

Now if I make quick steers (swerves to avoid something), the suspension seems to 'pop'. I can feel it in the wheel, it makes a nasty noise, but I am not sure what it is. I also notice the noise sometimes when I take hard corners. If you pop the hood and jerk the wheel while stopped, it sounds like power steering fluid is squirting somewhere, but there are no leaks and the fluid level is fine. Any Ideas?
