Of course, the average consumer is smart enough to know that domestic quality = crap! Wish I would have known that before I purchased a GM.

I would never trust an orginization like this. Domestic cars are not as bad as Japan & Europe would have us believe. Besides, I'm sick and tired of seeing people bash American cars here on this website. If you don't like your American Grand Am.... then go the **** away and buy something else!
.... Sorry, it bothers me a little that America is behind on a product that it made popular the world over and now all these other countries have taken it and bested us. Think about it..... Japanese products were total crap just a little as in the 1960's & 1970's.... now they're considered some of the best.

Well you have to realize that this is not something that is based on pure facts of how good a car is in any way. It has to do with cutomer/magazine hype over a car, plus traditional reliability, and some basics of how clean a car looks and how well it's engineered and stuff, but resale values are all interpreted by the market based on opinion basically. Hyundais still have some of the worst resale values simply because of their rep, even though their quality is like 10 time better than it was.
Look at the one dominating the list, Toyotas, Hondas, and luxury cars, which are all traditionally well built and reliable and they looks clean. |

Lack of American quality? Are we in 1980s?
Imports are automatically assumed to have higher quality for no reason. One MotorTrend article had a 1 year run on the Toyota Corolla and it needed both a tranny and head gasket and new brake rotors in under a year. Quality? And they had the balls to say that the car had "legendary reliability". My ass, no renewal... My 4 year old 50K mile GM has had 0 issues. Better than I can say for most of the imports I see in the car rags getting a 1 year review...

Our family has had numerous GMs that have gone over 130K before being sold (and they have had no problems). The wife's Grand Am has 100K now and I would trust the car to go cross country. My brother's Corsica, he sold at 130K, only had a motor mount fail in its past. My parents' old Astro van, sold to a bud, now has over 220K on original 4.3/auto. Our CEO has his 2nd new BMW 745i as local lemon laws got rid of this 1st one. And this 2nd one has had 2 dealership visits for repairs. $70K and its a POS!

I agree with Sleepwalkr and thehemi. I have a article I will scan later showing the quality of Japanese vs American cars, with price and all. I mean, look at the new malibu...remote starter STOCK.
Plus....I think these companies PAY to have their names listed in there. |

The list consist of mostly Honda and Toyota, which doesn't surprise me... I've had great experience with Toyota, Honda and Saturn

Hmm. I've owned both Japanese and American, and I can tell you that my American car is at least the equal of my old Japanese car, if not even better. My brother used to be a parts driver for a dealership selling Hondas and Oldsmobiles, and he prefers American based in large part on what he used to deliver for both makes.
American vs. Japanese in the quality game? I'll take American. |

Their larger cars and their trucks you'd be surprised with the reliability. For the $$ it is more than resonable.... well at least it was My Grand Prix's and Bonneville were so much a better than the Grand Am ever was as far as reliability. Also, don't judge ALL domestics by your old Alero and current Grand Am. That would be a mistake my friend. Yeah... the Japaneese cars hold up better overall and for the most part have better resale, but to say alll domestic cars are junk would be a mistake. Also low resale is a good thing if you are looking to buy a used car. Take the Seville STS. An american polished diamond of refinement and reliability, but I can get one a few years old for less than half of what some rich person paid for it new (or leased it), and you know no gas happy crazy teen owned it before. I like both domestics and Japaneese.... and all other "dang fariner" cars. Just depends on the vehicle itself. |

Yeah, I know. I have read and heard that GM trucks are the best. Their cars, on the other hand, aren't built as well as their trucks. Just what i've read and heard.
American Trucks American Cars That may be changing though. Ford and Chrysler seem to be making great improvements with their upcoming cars. Last edited by Vintalage; 02-24-2004 at 01:11 PM. |
