Pathetic that a car with the name "GTO" with 5.7liter V8 with 350HP and a 6-speed manual can't shake a 5-speed naturally aspirated Mustang with a little 4.6 engine. What has the world come to? GTO is only 300lbs heavier. That's not much really considering both cars weigh over 3400lbs.
Good thing they didn't compare GTO vs. Cobra.

Those are the fastest times I have seen for the GTO with all the original equipment still attached (spare tire still in, stock tires etc...), most other mags only got a 14.0 out of it. That's just plain awful.

I've seen most Mach I's run between a 13.3 and a 13.1.

Except the 13.62@104 motor trend pulled right? Anyway, I thought this was another articleI saw (I didn't click the link) by some Pontiac magazine where the best they got was like a 14.2 and the Mach 1 got like a 14.3, and I was wondering WTF they were doing. In any case, I read the article and the 13.52 completely stock is impressive. BTW, Mach 1 has a solid rear axle, GTO is independant. Ask anyone and IRS makes it more difficult to launch than a solid axle. IRS makes for better handling and a better ride tho. Last edited by VTECSiGAH8R; 04-14-2004 at 02:51 PM. |

SLP pulled a 13.1 bone stock (yes tires also) out of their GTO (verified).
and a few local GTO members 13.3 and a couple of 13.4's and 13.5's the GTO is for real , could it be better ? sure !!! , but its a huge step in the right direction. ![]() |

I almost agree with that if it were not for the fact that GM made F-bdies with this engine with supposedly less HP and they were much faster, they could have easily re-done the Camaro and Trans Am and start from the ground up instead if importing someone's car and sticking a high price tag and a GTO badge on it. And since WHEN has Ford ever touched one of GM's RWD V8 sports car with a Mustang...?? They took 1000 steps back and 1 step forward. They have a long way to go to get to where they were performance-wise. Everyone upped the bar and GM decided not to SURPASS the new performance standards (like they normally do), for pete's sake a frickin NEON can hang with this car!!! That's exactly what I mean. They should have reacted with a faster same class car. |

the cobra may be faster, but the GTO is in a class above them in build quality and refinement, f-body was even worse, it was an outstanding engine wraped in a rattling , creaking, cheap sh*t body and interior.
and those mustangs are in their 2nd year of production in their current form, hence the rebates and dealers trying to get rid of them, last year how much did the '03 cobra start at ? high $30k's , and the mach was right about $30k. so its not the same to compare what mach1's are going for compared to the goat which is new on the market. high $30's? WTF kind of crack are you smoking? Highest I have EVER seen was $32,500 when they first came out for the coupe. Maybe your looking at the 'verts. But your saying that the cobra doesnt offer build quality? I guess hand built motor isnt good enough

yes the verts, even the coupes the first few months they came out, i saw high 30s dealer adjusted...
funny how you should only look at the motor as a quality comparison, i thought you where buying a comlete car, not just a motor... kudos to ford for hand building a forged DOHC supercharged v8 , because that's what its gonna take to beat a mass produced natrually aspirated pushrod LS1. |

funny how you bring up thats its n/a. who cares. ford slapped a s/c on a 4.6L mod motor and its beating it by quite a bit. with a few bolt ons, your running over 500 RWHP. why? because its factory supercharged, not tuned to its potential, and very restrictive due to emissions.

When the blown SVT Cobra debuted I thought about buying one, and loved the car when I test drove it.
But, in the end I'm glad the insurance costs killed my lust for the car ($1600 every 6 months). Though it accelerated well, the interior was pure garbage, as was the structure. It's the kind of car that when you drive it hard, it also drives you hard, and fights back. It's not terribly comfortable or practical either. It's a cool car, but not what I needed in a car. The GTO is fast, can boogie just about as well without beating the Hell out of you, and it coddles when needed. I don't have make any excuses about the interior or build quality. It's also a handsome car and doesn't have any boy racer touches which I like. I can also easily take it on a cross country trip, which is something I do a few times a year. The insurance is also half as much. That's pretty much my personal thoughts, I've always liked Mustangs, but the SVT Cobra didn't embody the qualities I was looking for in a new car (neither did the Firebird). Some people are talking about build quality etc... wait til the GTO has a few miles on it and then see what happens. To me it sounds absurd to pick a GTO overr a Cobra for "build quality" and "refinement". A Honda Civic EX has better build quality and refinment than the GTO and any Mustang, if one were looking for a high class reliable refined compfortable non-boy racer sports coupe, one would have to look at what Europe and Japan has to offer instead of a heavy watered down Camaro trying to be a Caddy from Australia with a GTO badge on it. No offense to anyone with a GTO, it's just a car and I don't hold back my opinons on things like that, at least not on the internet.
