best car to mod

I am new to the whole performance mod thing, and I am asking for some advice. I bought my grand am because I really like it, and it is a nice car. Now I am talking to my friend, and he wants me to do all kinds of things to my car. I already got CAI, and exhaust. Now my question is i know the grand am is not a performance car. I want to know what could I get for my next car that would be a good car to mod. I am not looking at selling my car yet, but in the future I want to know what car could I get for a decent price that maybe has a v-8 engine and rear wheel drive, that I could mod to make a great performance car. I would greatly appreciate all the suggestions. i just want a performance car for my next car!

I'd say a mid- to late-90's Camaro or Firebird. If not that, then wait a year or two for the new GTO's performance parts to come onto the market...

You want a cheap V8 that you can mod the hell out of for cheap?

3rd gen F-body. You can get them in damn near mint condition for under $5k. SBC parts are a dime a dozen, so you could either start right to work on the stock engine, or just drop another $5k-$6k on a new crate engine and you'll be flying. I love those cars.

03 Cobra's sell new for $29,900 here in Detroit. In a few years (when you are ready for a new car) they will be teh cheap.

For performance....go nissan. 240, 180, etc. Toyota AE86 would also be very fun. It all depends on what you want to do with your car. I have my ponti for a reliable driver. My VW for my project auto-x car, and a couple years from now I hope to get either a nissan or toyota for drift.

Older style camaros and stuff are really good to mod. BUT you can't really do auto-x too well with them due to weight and not the greatest suspension. They are good for drag.

I agree. They are fast stock, even faster moded. V8, not V6.

If you can splurge a little and want a 4 banger, Evo or STi will do good.

I'll 2nd the 3rd gen Camaro and Firebirds and the 87-93 Mustang 5.0's. The aftermarket is overwhelmingly loaded with stuff for these cars and you could get either into the 13's cheaply, maybe even into the 12's if you spend your money right and know how to drive. I have owned several of each so I know a thing or 2 about them. If you look really hard enough, you may even be able to scoop up a 93-95 Z28 or Trans Am for around $5000 or less........ LT-1 and 6 speed would be mad fun..............

Did ANYONE besides Vintalage read my post???? You need to think before you buy. Ask yourself "What do I want this "new car" to do?" If you want to drag, American muscle all the way. If you want to drift, no camaros! If you want to Rally off road, no camaros! Sti and Evos are perfect for that. My VW will be perfect for that...because it will be a Group 2 car!

If you want cheap fast fun, go with a camaro like almost everyone else. Or a Mustang GT. Nothing new has been done in that market for some time now and it's boring to me. YAAAY 450 HP out of a 350 small block....look at me roast my tires. Whereas a supra would be like "YAAAY 1000HP because I'm a dyno whore but at least I have good suspension and can drift."

They just lack torque. That's all. My "drift" car is probably going to be an AE86. Fastbacks rock. They are old, but they get the job done and there are some engine swaps that can be done to get a lotta HP.

I still wouldn't complain about a 1000hp Supra....... even if I did just park it in the garage. It'd still smoke the hell out of my mom's bf's stupid Porsche......

Just caugt several supras on the road today. The last gen model. Two red ones, and a nice Black one modded with clear corners, rims, and a drop among other things. It looked beautiful! And a few weeks ago, I caught a nice yellow Supra modded. It looked amazing just sitting there.

I remember in my first year of high school ('97), my science teacher had a black '97 Supra with 17s. He pulled up front one time and everyone looked. Got me looking. I love the Supras! And Nissan 300zxs. Those are my kind of sport coupes. They just look more exciting to look at. They turn my head every time. I like the firebirds and camaros, but they do nothing for me anymore.

So the Supras have come out of hibernation after this bitter cold winter! So have the modded 300zxs. So have other nice, sport cars.
