Question Thinking about getting a beater

So due to rising gas prices, my need to work on my car which sometimes disables it for a day or two, and the amount of driving I do not to mention how many times it has had to go into the shop, i've been thinking about getting a reliable beater. I was thinking about a first gen Acura Legend. Probably the '86/'87 model. I can pick one up for cheap. I'd probably get the one with the 5spd and V6. Question is, is it good on gas. If not that, then a older Acura integra, Honda civic or Accord.

Any suggestions? No, I do not want domestic.

I think a honda civic would be a good beater. maybe a 95.

If you are looking for an older car, 1995 or newer 2-door Toyota Tercel. Don't get the 5-speed manual, get the 4 speed manual, I know that sounds wierd but you'd have to drive them both to know what I am talking about.

Fun to drive. 1900LBS. Much quicker than a heavy Civic (DX), will pace or beat a Civic LX. Low Maintnenance. Reliable. 30+MPG in the city. Very roomy for it's size.

Gurantee if you drive a Civic, Sentra and Tercel back to back, you'll get the Tercel.

Better have alot of film in the video camera (or batteries in the digital video camera) since a 1/4 mile drag would take quite a while.

I've got a 15 min feed ability w/ my didigtal camera, should be enough for the 1/8th mile.

I had a 83 Tercel... it got about 32mpg. My saturn is about the same. But since it's an older car and you might run into problems i would go with a Civic. If the gas prices go down, then you can take the car and make it pretty fast for cheap.

Well, I haven't done my research on the older Legends but I figured since it's older with not alot of power, gas would be good. I better read up on it.

The years for the civic I want anywhere from '93 - '95. '96 maybe. Accord would probably be '90 - '94?

I was doing some research on the a '93 Toyota Camry and I didn't realize the V6 has more HP than our cars. 185hp @ 5750 RPM/190tq @ 4500 RPM. That's pretty impressive given how old it is. That explains why I see it take off so fast, faster than I would have expected.

ya its unbelievable. a friend of mine has one and they are pretty quick and he gets great gas mileage. car has like 180,000 miles on it and runs like a champ. not to mention still looks in pretty good shape. not a bad choice in my mind

I thought you said you were concerned with fuel mileage?

Look at the old school toyota camrys I know a few people that had them well over 100k with little to no problems. One of my ex's had a 92 5 speed its a decent little car not that fast but the 4 cylinder saves on gas. Or look at an early 90s accord those things dont die either.

The reason I mention a '86-'87 Legend is that I could pick one up from $500 - $1000. Give or take. That's the pro. The cons are Maintainence, gas is not much better than the Grand am, if at all, and other various things. So I don't know about that one. But camry, accord, civic, and integra i'll take a look at. Maybe tercel. I won't take the legend off the list, but it's just not at the top.
