IAT Switch?

Hi, thinking about doing IAT mod but don't know to much about it yet, still looking at posting and info on it and just wondering... this looks like a drag strip only mod and I have a 99 GA GT1 witha few mods CAI, ported MAF, ported intake a few others and I use this car for every day driving with a few light to light races so this sounds like not a good mod for me unless...
Would adding a switch so I could just turn it off when I wanted to disable the IAT sensor be possible? I know I would get a SVS light once the switch is flipped but the light should go out when I turn the switch back ..wouldn't it?
basically I would just splice a length of wire into one of the wires to the IAT sensor and add a toggle switch inside the car somewere so I could have control of IAT at flip of a switch..
could this work?

I don't believe this could work. With the IAT mod, you don't just simply unhook the wires, which, with a switch, is what you would be doing in essence. You have to put a resistor (about $0.30 at Radio Shack) in the end of the IAT harness itself to trick the computer into thinking the air coming into the manifold is a constant 32 degrees. When that happens, the computer overcompensates by putting more fuel into the engine to make a rich condition. More fuel = more kick. It's not much kick at all, but it is a good little drag trick to do as it helps with low end torque a bit. If you drive around with it all the time, you'll get EXTREMELY bad gas mileage. I did a test a few months ago with this. I drove around normally using one tank of gas first with the IAT mod, then without it. I got 210 miles with it on, and 290 without it on. With gas prices the way they are, I don't think you'd wanna do that. It's not hard and seriously takes 2 minutes to take on and off. Hope that helps...

All you need is a double-pole, double-throw switch. Take the 2 wires from the harness to the middle terminals. Put the sensor on one end pair of terminals and the desired resistor across the other end. Done.

Anyway, the cost of the parts would not be worth the whole 1 or 2 HP you'll get from it anyway.

Ah, this is true. I stand corrected. Like Craig said, though, the cost of the parts and the time it would take to install almost wouldn't be worth it. Just take a few minutes and do it manually when you want to race the car.

kinda similar to a happy knob, right?...allowing you to 'dialing in' more timing (and some minimal fueling) by telling the comp that its cooler via iat.

ian99gt....as for getting much worse fuel economy with this mod i have to disagree, when using this on my custom dhp...my mpg suffered no ill effects.

ahh I kinda understand now, thanks guys..
so I do need the little resistor because I thought it was just for keeping the SVS from going off but I understand it's actually needed for this to work..cool
I know it's not going to add much horse power at all but I look at it as.."it's just something to do that will make a tiny difference".... I get bord and these somewhat easy little inexpensive mods are just fun to do while saving pennys for more expensive stuff.
just thought about this because back in my Probe GT days the club guys were always talking about the IAT switch mod and how it made the cars at a flip of a switch go from doing a tiny struggeling cherp to getting a few seconds of nice screetch and setting you back in your seat. from what I remember there was never a resister envolved, just cut n splice in your switch. seems our GA's require a little more to it than that.
thanks for the how too Craig.. does there happen to be a detailed how to in any postings anywere for the IAT with switch setup? i'm not much of an electrician but can follow detailed instructions.
which resistor and wiring it and the sensor to the switch is my bug.

Really? Mine SUCKED with the IAT mod done. Do you think it would have something to do with you having DHP as opposed to me not having DHP? Maybe the reprogram makes up for something like that...

If I recall it's a 3.3kohm resistor for 32*F, right?
